Chapter 4: Genuine Advice
It wasn't right. As Nick walked into the room, he knew right away that there was just something wrong with it. Something was off, it just wasn't right. He found the light switch, and surveyed the area. Tables with chairs placed upside down, the perfectly buffed dance floor, the immaculate bar, the inauspicious raised platform that served as a stage. The plain brick walls and the state of the art lights above showed the endearing mix of new and old that the place possessed.
As he walked around the huge room, trying to get a feel of the room, Nick realized what was wrong with the room. It was empty and hadn't been used. When he had seen it the first time, it had been so welcoming. The kind of place where you immediately felt at home in; no matter who you were. And now, it was cold and uncomfortable, because it was empty.
Nick walked up to the stage, and laid his hands down on the dusty, scuffed surface. He could just imagine all the bands that had played upon it, Premiere in particular. He could see Lilia when she was had been a part of them, their lead singer. She would own the stage with her presence, he just knew she would. Looking around Genuine, Nick felt how much of Lilia was in it. She seemed to haunt the place. He could understand, now, why it was so very important to her. It was her.
"Who the hell are you and how did you get in here?" a gruff voice demanded, startling Nick out of his contemplation.
"I'd ask you the same thing, but I hate to answer a question with another question," Nick answered.
"Then start answering. Who are you?" the man asked, stepping out of the dim hallway, into the light. Nick recognized him as the man in the picture.
"My name is Nick. I came in through the front door. How about you?" Nick asked.
"Daniel, back door. Okay, Nick, why are you here?" he asked, dropping the gruff voice.
"Wanted to see what Genuine was like. Lilia's baby, everyone called it. She spoke a lot of it," Nick said.
"She did, did she? So you know Lilia. That answers another question. You are the Nick, right?" Daniel asked.
"The Nick? Wow, I have a title now. Yeah, that's me."
"Why are you here?"
"Déjà vu. Didn't we just go over this?" Nick sighed.
"No. Why are you here, in this city? Don't you live in Florida?" Daniel demanded, his voice becoming threatening, as he stepped closer to Nick.
"I just love Toronto in the winter... The answer is upstairs, sir. She's kind of mad at me right now, and I doubt she'll let me back in when I go back, but that's another matter."
"Why is she mad at you? What did you do to her?" Daniel demanded, his eyes flashing with warning. Nick saw the resemblance in temper between Lilia and him. The eyes were a different color, but they mirrored the same emotions.
"Well, I had a revelation a few days ago, which was after she left, why didn't I go after her? Why? It would have been so simple and logical, but a man has got to have his pride…even though it can be a pain in the ass sometimes. I decided, even though I'm a few months late and she's not liking this decision much, to dismiss my pride and come after her."
"Good boy. So…why are you down here?"
"I'm making her angry at me. It's the only time she'll talk to me, so if I keep pissing her off, eventually we'll get on the right subject."
"Nice try. Look, I have a few people coming in here in a few minutes, so if you wouldn't mind?" Daniel asked.
"Sure. What's going on down here?"
"Just interviewing some new staff."
"New staff? Genuine's reopening?"
"Hoping so. We've been getting a lot of calls…and it looks good. I haven't told Lilia yet, but it really is looking good. She needs this place," Daniel said.
"Tell me about it."
* * * *
"What do you want?" Lilia said as she opened the door.
"Wow, and I thought we had moved past those differences," Jacki said.
"Sorry, Jacki, I thought you were someone else. What's new? How's Damon?" she asked, leading her into her living room. Ever since Jacki and Damon's relationship had begun, Lilia had noticed a real change in Jacki. She dropped the "I am Satan" act, and became a real, compassionate human being. Lilia had even caught Jacki crying while watching Titanic, which astounded her. Jacki actually shedding tears.
"That's why I'm here. You guys are really close, and because of the whole band thing, I can't talk to Sandy or Paul. So I felt like I can trust you."
"Okay, spill."
"Paul and Sandy are getting super-serious, and I can see a ring in the near future. The problem? It's giving Damon all these ideas about commitment that I'm just not ready to make yet. I mean, I love him more than anything, but I'm not ready to even think about marriage and I think he is and I just don't want our messages to get crossed…or him to get any ideas from Paul," Jacki spewed forth.
"Oh, there's a ring already, Sandy just doesn't know about it. Okay, Jacki, let me ask you a couple questions. You love Damon, right?" Lilia asked patiently.
"Of course."
"You can't see yourself with anyone else?"
"Of course not."
"You can't see him with anyone else?"
"I'd kill her."
"You are twenty-four, and do want to get married one day, right?"
"Yes. I don't see what you are getting at."
"Jacki, you love him, and you don't want to be with anyone else. You guys are practically living together, you are never apart. If you were any close, you'd be married. So what are you so afraid of?" Lilia asked gently. Jacki sighed.
"Do you really want to know? I'm afraid that happened to Nick would happen to me." Lilia froze.
"Meaning what?"
"Lilia, he worshipped you, and you left. What happened if Damon ever left me?" Jacki asked, the fear plain on her face.
"What does this have to do with commitment?" Lilia demanded coldly.
"If I make a commitment to him and he leaves, where will I be, you know? I'd be lost," Jacki sighed.
"You are afraid of nothing. Damon isn't going anywhere. If he asks, you know, in your heart -that is, if you have one- that the answer will be yes," Lilia said.
