Chapter 32: All in Due Time

Lacey had squared off against Cairo's grandmother for almost twenty minutes, screaming at her, and calling her just about everything there was in the book. Maggie seemed to just stare at her, and she didn't even acknowledge anything she had said. Meagan went running past them and up the stairs, crying. Brian and Lacey ignored her completely.

"How could you do this to your own granddaughter? That's what I don't understand," Lacey said, for the tenth time.

"And you never shall, which is why you will never be a award-winning author, like I shall be. I've had enough. I'm retiring to my study," she declared, turning and walking away.

"Where did Nick go?" Brian asked.

"He followed Kay. Think they're talking?" Lacey asked.

"Yelling would be more like it. But it's what they need, time alone, without Meagan around to get in the way. This way, they can get everything out in the open, without her interference," Brian said.

"Okay. Well, let's find her, just to check up on her. If he's making her cry, I swear I will kill him," Lacey said, the one thing she couldn't stand was to see her best friend cry. Brian nodded in agreement, and they walked down the hallway, until they found the living room.

They could see through the doorway what was happening. Lacey grabbed Brian's hand in excitement as she saw Cairo with Nick's arms around her. As they watched, suddenly Cairo pushed away from him.

"No, I can't…I can't…You took it back. You said you would never take it back, and you did," Cairo protested.

"I told you, I had no choice. In my mind, all I could see was that you hurt me, and I couldn't stand that, so I had to return the favour. Please, if you can't forgive me for it, at least understand what was happening. Meagan, the dreams, it was all getting to me," he said, desperate for her to understand.

"What dreams?" Cairo asked, frowning. She took a subtle step back from her, but Nick held onto her hand.

"I could see you and him, together. And it was so much, because I worked so hard to get back to you, I tried so hard, and there you were with him. And I ran, because she was beside me, forcing me to watch," Nick said, shaking his head, lost in the memory of the dream.

"Who was she?" Cairo asked, having a feeling that she knew where it was going.

"Her name…was Elizabeth. She knew me, she knew us, and she knew him, and she watched it all, and she was always beside me, forcing me to think that you and he were…she was always there, always forcing me to see it," Nick explained. The name clicked instantly in Cairo's mind. According to Katherine's journal, Elizabeth was Andrew's wife.

Squeezing Nick's hand, she thought about what she had to say, what she could say in a moment like this. He had hurt her; that would never change. But it wasn't entirely his fault…

"Kay, I want you to know that through it all, I still loved you. Even though she was there, the whole time telling me all these horrible things, I still felt it," he said, looking down into her eyes.

Suddenly, a scream ripped through the air. Brian and Lacey ran towards it's general direction, halting in the foyer, at the stairs. They didn't know where it had come from. Nick and Cairo were not too far behind them.

"Who was that?" Cairo asked shakily.

"Do you guys smell that?" Brian asked, frowning.

"Yeah, I can smell it too," Lacey said, searching around, as if to find the source of the smell.

"Where's Meagan?" Cairo asked.

"Oh my god, can you smell smoke?" Nick said.
