SLASH:
the story

Person, who later became known as Slash, was born on July 23, 1965, in England town called Stoke-on-Trent, and his real name is Saul <slash>Hudson. Slash's upbringing was pretty different than the usual. Axl's childhood was traumatic, Steven's was rebellious, and Duff's teenage years were spent on punk rock road, but Slash's was really cool. His father, Tony Hudson, was a graphic artist who created covers for music albums; he made album sleeves for Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, to name a few. And Slash's mother Ola was a costume designer, and designed stage clothes to tons of successful artists - to everyone from Diana Ross to John Lennon, and David Bowie's outfit for his 1975's "The Man Who Fell To Earth". So no wonder that Slash's upbringing and his teenage years were 'different', with family friends he met when he was a kid at his home - David Geffen, David Bowie, Iggy Pop... Slash: " I grew up in a weird environment compared to most kids. I grew up in this, like, rock'n'roll atmosphere. I was always around eccentric people. I just thought I was normal. I had a great childhood." In 1977 his father moved to L.A. and of course took young Slash with him.
Slash, as a teenager, was able to listen lots of free records, and his favourite bands were ones like Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, The Who... Slash quickly became not interested in school, and when he picked up a guitar, "any chance I may have had of getting my shit together in school disappeared straight out the window." Slash became a guitar addict after he started hanging out with his mate at Bancroft Junior High, Steven Adler in the age of 14.
Adler had a guitar and an amp at his grandma's place in Hollywood; he tried to play Kiss songs. Aerosmith's 1976 album "Rocks" was Slash's biggest influence at the time, so Slash got his first guitar ("a plank with one string") and started playing tunes from it.
After he knew how to play the guitar, he started looking for a band to<slash and guitar> play. At this time he tried with London, rehearsed with Titas Sloane and failed an audition to Poison. After all that miseries he teamed up with Steven Adler, who stopped trying to be a guitar man, and switched to drum playing. They formed the band called "Road Crew", but where's a bass? Slash advertized in a local music paper, that they need a bassist - and first person to call was young punk that came to L.A. from Seattle, mr. Duff McKagan. Slash and Steve agreed to give Duff a trial, but soon Duff found out that it's not the band he came all the way from Washington, and quit. "Road Crew" seemed like disbanded, and Slash killed time partying with Steve.
But, as you know, Duff at the time found new band to play in - Guns N' Roses, and soon they needed a guitarist and a drummer, so Duff suggested to Izzy Stradlin and Axl Rose that they call Slash and Steve for replacement. Most fun of it all, Slash already did a rehearse with those guys, but failed, as with Poison ("he was too bluesy at the time", said Izzy). What's happened then, everybody here knows - the legendary line-up of Guns N' Roses was formed. Complete history of Guns N' Roses you can read here - this page, as you understand, concentrrates on Slash.
Slash had been a member of Guns N' Roses for 11 years - since 1985 to 1996, when he officially left the band. In 1994 he started working with his solo-project, called "Slash's Snakepit", that released an album in 1995 - titled "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere". And after touring with slash!Slash's Snakepit in support of an album, in the middle of 1996 he decided to form a new band, whose goal wasn't a record deal - that was a band that only played live blues covers, as well as songs from "Snakepit"'s album. The line-up included Teddy Andreadis - vocals, harmonoca, organ, John Griparic - bassist, Bobby Schenk - guitar, Alvino Bennet on drums and Dave McClarem on saxophone. Have I forget someone? Oh, of course - Slash played lead! The band was called "Blues Ball" and they played till the fall of 1997.
Since then, we heard a lotta news about Slash - jamming with musicians, anniversaries... In 1998 came a message that Slash's gonna record a new, his second album in 1999. He's now working on it with producer Jack Douglas and it will be released by the end of the year.
The last stuff I heard about Slash is that he was arrested for assault. Seems like bullshit, but official message said, that he 'allegedly assaulted his estranged girlfriend'. Pretty soon it was turned out as false charges and Slash was released from jail. It's happened on July 1999.
But then another shit had to come: lately, somebody broke into Slash's Hollywood house in Beverly Hills and stole some of his favourite guitars and things from the house. Slash was really upset with that, and the cops said they're gonna find the sonofabitch. But I don't think he's gonna be found now. You can check out the story for more details here.
