Steven Adler: short history
Steve was born in
Cleveland, Ohio, as Gilby
Clarke and Dizzy
Reed, other members of Guns N' Roses, on January 22, 1965. He said
that in his childhood he was 'feisty little kid', because 'a super bad
guy came out of me when I was a wee youngster. I was really bad: got thrown
out of eight, nine different schools, I used to fight with the teachers,
I'd get in the fight every day...". In 1972 his family moved to L.A., and
in the age of just 12 he left his home and lived with grandma, and then
he fell in love with music. One of his first drum influences were Roger
Taylor ("Queen", Guns N' Roses later appeared
on a tribute to Freddie Mercuy gig, but, sadly, already without Steve),
Keith
Moon ("The Who", inspiration of every drummer),
and John Bonham
of "Led Zep".
Steve's first step
on
the road to success was... crash on a scateboard. His schoolmate, Saul
Hudson, later became known as Slash,
was hanging out with the bike in some playground and, when he saw Steven
who had fallen off his skateboard, went over to see if he was alright.
("I thoght he had killed himself" - Slash). They started to hang out after
that, and back then Slash wasn't a guitarist. He came to Steven's place,
and saw him playing KISS songs (Steve's other influence) on a guitar. It
was an incitement for Slash to start practising the guitar, but Steven
understood guitar is not his profile, and after trying to do something
with vocals, he'd switched to drums. He had no drums at the beginning,
and pounded on books and Tupperware. Then he worked for a while and bought
himself a drum kit.
In 1984-85 they
formed a band with Slash, who played guitar now well, and called it "Road
Crew", but the band suffered without bassist,
and then came Duff
McKagan, who had just moved to L.A. They didn't succeed with that project,
so Duff left in 1985 and soon got invitation to join Guns N' Roses, and
some time after offered Slash and Steve as replacement for Tracii
and Rob. For more Guns N' Roses story, click here.
Steve, as we know,
by the end of the 80's became a heavy drug addict, and because of that
couldn't continue with the Guns, though he tried hard to leave the drugs,
but, as you understand, it's not so easy. But Guns couldn't wait, and in
the middle of 1990 Steve was fired. His last show was "Farm Aid IV",
where Guns n' Roses first time performed UK Subs' cover "Down On A Farm".
We can still hear Steve on "Use Your Illusion
-
II", though, on the track called "Civil
War".
And then he, with
love and support of his family, started the treatment. He cleaned up his
act entirely and now he's sober, and we can say he did his best. Well done,
Steve!
From his news we
saw, that in 1993 he launched a lawsuit against Guns N' Roses, and blaimed
them 'for turning him to drugs'. Well, don't know... Guns N' Roses made
a $2.500.000 out-of-court payment to him in september.
After that came
rumours, that Andy McCoy (???), ex-Hanoi Rocks'
guitarist,
made him offer to
join his band, and after this I didn't hear anything, and some rumours
that Steve re-formed "Road Crew" with Davy Vain, also unconfirmed.
Later, he wrote
the autobiographical book called "No Bed Of
Roses", and in 1996 played with the band "Freaks
In The Room". After that I heard news about
his arrest for some rumble in 1998, and also some rumours that he plays
now in the band called "BulletBoys".
