Biography
Natalie Anne Merchant was born on October 26, 1963 in Jamestown, New York. Her parents are Irish and Sicilian. Natalie was the second youngest in a family of four kids. She has two brothers and a sister. When Natalie was very young, her parents divorced. She was raised by her mother with her siblings at her side. When she was 10, Natalie was not allowed to watch television. Her and her sibling had to find other ways to entertain themselves. In 1981, (at age 16), Natalie joined the 10,000 Maniacs. She stayed with the Maniacs for 12 years, and then in 1995, she released her first solo album, Tigerlily. Hit singles from this album include Wonder, Carnival, and Jealousy. In 1998, Natalie came out with her second solo album, Ophelia. So far, there has been one single from this album, called Kind and Generous. The next single will be Break Your Heart, a song she performed with N'Dea Davenport. She also co-headlined the 1998 Lilith Fair with Sarah McLachlan, Paula Cole, Lisa Loeb, and many other notable women in music.
