"Every boy and every girl, spice up your life. People of the world spice up your life...ahhhhhhhh..." The Spice Girls blasted from brittney's alarm clock. She rolled over,"Not this early!" she complained as she slamed down the snooze button.
"Get jiggy with it, na-na-na-na-na, get jiggy with it.." rang out once more. "Fine, fine, I'm getting up." she wined throwing back the covers almost 10 minutes later.
After taking a warm shower and getting dressed she went down stairs for breakfast. Waiting for her was a freshly squeezed glass of orange juice, toast, eggs and bacon. "OK, I usually don't eat anything but a poptart in the morning, but this will do." she thought eyeing the steaming food.
"I'll drive you to school today until you get to know more people and maybe then, only if you want , you can walk. Did you want to walk home after school? Cause if you don't I can pick you up. It's really no problem." aunt Karen said sitting down at the table.
"I'll be fine. Stop worrying about me. I'm ok." Brittney reassured her.
"Ok, but I'm still going to drive you to school, no buts about it." Karen ordered.
When she was finished breakfast, Brittney ran up to her room to make sure she looked ok. As she looked at her refection in the mirror, she wondered if she sould put her hair up or leave it down. It was down long hanging over her blue top. Her flares she wore went perfect with everything, especially her shoes. "OK, I'm fine. Or as fine as I'm going to be anyway." She felt her stomach tighten up. She grabbed her book bag and a picture of her mom and dad off her dresser and shoved it in the side pocket of her bag, just for good luck.
"OK you have your key, right? And your schedule(sp?),and your money?" karen questioned for the hundreth time.
"YES!!" Brittney said impatiently while unbuckeling her seat-belt. "Thank you, bye!" And with that she slammed the door.
She turned around to see the school towering over her like some kind of giant. "You can do this." she told herself. Her eyes followed the letters T-U-L-S-A H-I-G-H across and down to the door. She stepped in to see a sworm of kids bumping into her and shoving her. There were ones that looked like Marilyn Manson, some that looked like Courtney Love, and others that looked like a cross between the Backstreet boys and Will Smith. "Room 207, 207." she repeated over and over in her head. She roamed the hallways while barely even paying attention to the reaction of people. "207" was maked on the door. "Great" she sighed with releaf. She turned the knob only to see about 20 kids turn their heads and look up at her. All of a sudden she became very self cautous.. Even the sound of her own heals on the floor made her cringe.
"You must be Brittney." said a short lady satnding in front of a desk.
"Are you miss Gail?" she asked half shaking.
"Yes dear, I am.But class dosen't start for another 5 or 10 minutes so feel free to just talk with some of the other kids."
" Well, at least I don't have a teacher from Hell." she thought thankfully. brittney made her way down the middle row into the third last seat. She sat her book bag on the desk when she heard "hey baby!" She flung around to see a not so bad looking guy sitting beside her. But he was obvously(sp?) full of him self.
"Hi" she smiled meakly, but the bell interupted them both and Brittney practicly panicted.
While Miss Gail took role call, Brittney noticed that she said Josh Sanders. That was Tay's friends. She looked across at him. He was sooooo good looking! He kind of resembled Mark from Sugar Ray, but with shorter hair and younger.
When Brittney heard her name, she said "present" and then looked at Josh. He was looking at her and they both smiled at each other. Obvously(sp?), Tay must have metioned her to him. She just hoped it wasn't bad things.
Her thoughts were interupted by Miss Gail, who was now passing out their physics books. The day had just started and Brittney was already shaking.
The bell sounded again an hour later for the end of class. Brittney quickley grabbed her books in anticipation to get to her next class. While she was practicly running out the door, she bumpped right into Josh.
"Hey." he smiled once more. "Your Brittney, right?"
"Yeah, aren't you Taylor's friend?" she asked.
"Actually, yeah, that's how I know who you are. What class do you have next? Cause I gotta go."
"Ah," Brittney took out her schedual from her pocket. "Math, with Mrs.Smith." she replied.
"Cool, me too! It's upstairs, let's go."
Brittney couldn't belive that she was talking with him. "He's sooooo good lookin". she thought and then began to worry again. "Oh no, what did Tay tell him about me?" she wondered.
"So, have you seen much of Tulsa yet? I mean, it's not that big, but there are things to see and do."
"Actually, not really. I've seen a couple places, but I haven't really had a chance."
"Well, maybe me and you and Tay can all go somewhere sometime. Do you like the movies?"
"Sure" Brittney said not knowing just what to say.
"Well, I'll call Tay after school and see what he's doing Wednsday. Is Wednsday good for you?"
Brittney decided that last night Tay had been normal, just like anyone else, but would he be different if a crowd of people were with them at the movies? Maybe if she just went and tried to have a good time as friends and put it out of her mind, than she'd be ok.
"Yeah, great." she answered still unsure.
They both walked into their next class. This time the seats were in groups.Josh waved at a guy who was sitting with another girl in the corner of the room.
They walked over towards them.
"Brock and Michelle, this is Brittney, she just moved here from New York." introduced Josh.
They all said hi and they both sat down. Mrs.Smith started talking to the class, but Brittney wasn't listening. She was too busy thinking about the movies." What if something happens? What if... I don't know... I just.... can I trust him?" There were 2 days till Wensday and Brittney ws already nervous.
The day had gone ny more quickly than Brittney had thought it would have. Now, with her books in hand, she was on her way to her new locker.
After several times trying to get her locker undone, it finally opened. The sidea and door were bare of any pictures, except for tape and stickers left from other years. Not to mention the gum stuck in the upper right hand corner. She practiclly eyed the locker, scared to put books in amongst the dirt.
"Man you belive all the Phyics homework we have on our first day back?" shot a voice from beside her. Standing there, about 2 lockers away, was Michelle.
"Oh yeah, I know. It's really not fair!" Brittney answered but still in discust over her newly found cubby hole.
"Hey, Brock, Josh and I walk home together everyday, so you want to come?"
"Sure" she replied with relief on not having to walk home alone.
Brock came up and grabbed Michelle around her waist. Michelle laughed and kissed him on the cheek. brittney turned to her locker. She decided that until she had posters to cover up some of the mess, she'd carry her books.
"Are you guys comming?" yelled Josh from the core-door.
Soon enough they were all on there way home. Josh and Brock had split apart from the two girls, but of course, not until a long goodbye to Michelle, as she promised that she'd call Brock the minute she got in the door.
"Isn't he great?" Michelle marveled. "Just sometimes he's a bit persistant.
"Yeah, everybody seems really nice." Brittney agreed.
"Especially Taylor." Michelle teased. "What's up with you guys anyway?"
"He's great, but we have a lot of differences..." she said trying to find the words she didn't have.
"This is my house. I gave you my phone number at lunch right? So call me tonight, ok?" Michelle stated while walking in her driveway.
"Bye" Brittney yelled while thinking that all she would get if she did call was a busy signal, because of Brock.
She turned the corner onto East Ave. when she saw somwone walking toward her. It was Tay. "Stay calm" she told herself.
"Hello" Tay smiled lightly at her.
"Hi" she returned.
"I just thought I'd come meet you after your first day of school at Tulsa high. How was it?"
"Well, Josh is in my class, and I met Brock and Michelle. They all seem really nice." she explained not as much as even looking at him.
"Are you going to the movies Wednsday?"
"How did you...."
"I just got off the phone with Josh and then I ran up the street to meet you."
"Oh, well, yeah, I guess." she mumbbled while trying to look at him.
"listen, I'm not a bad person. We've been through this before. I really like you. Can't we be friends? At least for now?" Tay suggested.
The words came out of his mouth so fast brittney didn't know what to say next.
"It's not that." she started. "I can't talk. I've got tons of homework. If I don't see you tomorrow, then I'll see you Wednsday."
She ran into her driveway and slammed the door to her house before Taylor could even get the chance to say anything.
She let out a big sigh of relief from dodging the subject, while leaning on the back off the door. She turned around and looked out the peep hole.
Tay was still standing there rubbing his foot through some dirt on the sidewalk.
" I don't get her!" he decided as her turned and walked towards home."
