"Come on pick up, pick up," Nick chanted into the phone.
"Hello?"
"Yo Frick guess what!"
"Nick it’s late."
"I know Brian, but I have great news!!!"
"What Nick?" Brian sighed.
"My mom gave me four tickets to the Bahamas for my birthday!"
"Cool, anything else?"
" We leave next week."
"We?"
“Yes, I told you I got four tickets Brian, that’s me, Sahar, you, and Amanda!"
"Amanda," Brian said his voice perking up.
"Yup, but you better behave yourself Brian, she’s my best friend and…"
"Nick shut up, she’s a big girl and you and Sahar will be sucking to much face to notice anything Manda and I do." Nick was quiet, he still wasn’t to keen on the idea of Brian and Amanda. He wasn’t jealous, but he just didn’t like the thought of Amanda with Brian. It wasn’t like Brian was a hornball, that was AJ, but he was definitely more experienced than Amanda. "Nick?"
"Yah Brian, sorry I spaced."
"Look Nick, I know she’s your best friend and you’re protective but she’s 20 years old and able to make her own decisions. You know me and you know my opinion on the whole pre-marital thing so don’t get you panties in a bunch, we’ll be okay." Nick sighed and glanced at the picture of Amanda and him at her prom. She was 1 year ahead of Sahar in school so he was able to go to both proms. "Besides it’s You and Sahar that Amanda and I should be worrying about." Brian continued.
"Hey she’s 18, and I’m 19, everything’s perfectly legal," Nick protested.
"Yah and Amanda is 20 and I’m 23, so it’s even more legal."
"Brian Thomas!!!" Nick heard a voice boom in the background.
"It’s a joke Kev," Brian quickly covered in a shaky voice, "it was just a joke."
"Look Brian, I gotta go, I’ll talk to you tomorrow."
"I won’t be home, Amanda and I are going out."
"Oh, well call me when you get home if it’s not late."
"Will do, talk to ya tomorrow."
"Bye Brian."
"Oh man, this is high," Amanda whimpered from the edge of the balloon.
Brian laughed, "scared?"
Amanda turned and glared, "I don’t see you moving from the center of the basket there, big guy."
"That’s cause I’m steering," Brian retorted. Usually there was a guide to fly the balloons but the man recognized Brian and let him take it up on his own. Amanda rolled her eyes and leaned back over the side to look down.
"Oh crap," she shouted suddenly.
"What?" Brian asked.
"My necklace fell off, its stuck on the edge of the basket."
"We’ll get it when we land."
"It’s the one Nick gave me for graduation, I don’t want it to fall. Besides I think I can reach it."
"Amanda, wait I’ll get it," Brian told her but she was already leaning over the side. Suddenly as if everything was in slow motion Brian saw Amanda slip and heard her scream his name. He rushed forward and grabbed her waist and yanked her back before she slipped over the edge. "Oh my god Brian," she shrieked throwing her arms around him and knocking him down to the floor.
"Are you okay?" he asked. She nodded and buried her face in his neck, "thank you."
Brian just kissed her forehead, "don’t scare me like that again okay?" Amanda looked up and smile softly, and kissed him. For the next few minutes they just sat there floating through the sky, locked in each other’s embrace.
"So are you and Brian a couple?" Sahar whispered to Amanda as the sat in the airport waiting for their plane.
Amanda glanced over at Brian and Nick who were signing some autographs. "No, he hasn’t asked me yet." She sighed, "it’s funny, a week ago I couldn’t stand him and now I’ve fallen head over heels for him."
"Does he know?" Sahar asked, following Amanda’s gaze to the group of girl’s fighting for Brian’s attention.
"I don’t know, the last couple days he’s been distant."
"I’ll talk to Nick, maybe he’ll know," Sahar told her. Amanda nodded.
"Flight 134 to the Bahamas is now boarding," the announcer called out.
"Sorry guys, that’s us," Nick announced. He and Brian grabbed their bags and followed Amanda and Sahar to the plane. They got on the plane and settled in. Amanda was next to the window, with Brian next to her. Nick was in front of them by the window with Sahar next to him. Slowly Amanda buckled her seatbelt and stared out the window, something was going to happen on this trip, something significant and she wasn’t sure what.
