BAND INFO:

Five Iron Frenzy is an awesome punk/ska core band from Denver, Colorado. The band has two albums out: 'Upbeats and Beatdowns' and 'Our Newest Album Ever' and their latest, an EP entitled 'Quantity is Job 1'. Five Iron Frenzy is one of the most innovative bands in ska today. The band is also very devoted to their fans, something that is quite rare and refreshing. They have two albums out and an EP. Their first album, 'Upbeats and Beatdowns', was upbeat ska with a punk sound, with such great songs as "Flowery Song" and "Beautiful America". With 'Our Newest Album Ever', the band took a big step forward, coming off with a more professional sound, while maintaining their awesome vocals, enthusiastic punk energy and great melodies. The band rounds this off with fun, enjoyable, and uplifting lyrics. Their latest, the 'Quantity Is Job 1' EP, shows a marked maturity in both vocals and music. One of the tracks on the EP, "Dandelions", is probably one of the best Five Iron songs ever.

One really interesting thing about Five Iron Frenzy is that they never really went for fame or success with the band. "For me personally, this [success] wasn't even a goal," says Keith Hoerig. "My original goal for Five Iron was just to be a good local band- to be able to go as a Christian band and open for non-Christian bands at clubs in the Colorado area, just to do ministry here." Reese echoes, "I don't think any of us saw this [success] coming. We were suprised we could actually make at this- you know, that we could actually get money to pay for our equipment." Well, not only have they got money to pay for their equipment, but quite a bit else too.

Throughout 1998, Five Iron was very busy, recording an EP and touring a lot. They toured with Less Than Jake, The Toasters, Mustard Plug, The Blue Meanies, Mu330, and others on the Ska Against Racism tour for almost 8 weeks and helped raise over $10,000 for anti-racism charities, followed by their first international shows- in Canada and Europe. Then they toured with The Echoing Green and The W's to help benefit local charities, and played the Main Stage at Cornerstone Festival. As winter approached, Five Iron toured with the Mad Caddies and The W's to help collect blankets for local homeless shelters. Then, they participated in the Skamania tour with the Insyderz and the Supertones to help benefit Food for the Hungry, which helps to feed hungry people in third world countries. Overall, Five Iron played about 140 shows with all kinds of bands and were named the "Best Ska Band" in Denver by Westword magazine.

Not only does this band produce a genuine punk/ska sound, but they also have a live show like no other. The band has an enthusiasm on stage that no one could ever replicate. Not only do they try to make it a fun and a memorable experience for the crowd, but you can tell that they are having fun too. In fact, at Cornerstone one time, Reese came out in a full cow suit. They are known for calling people up onto the stage to dance with them, and other such things. One thing that tops off their show on stage is that they are down-to-earth people who realize that they are no better than anyone else- and it shows in the way they act. They always hang out with the crowd after their show. When I was at one of their shows I talked to Reese for about fifteen minutes and Dennis started skankin' with a group of us and at another show, Keith hung out with me for most of the time while the other bands were playing and then I got to talk with most of the rest of the band later on, including Reese, Jeff the Girl and Sonnie. They enjoy hangin' out with you as much as you enjoy hangin' out with them. They are a band that anyone that has heard them is sure to like. If you haven't heard them make sure you do.
