NOVEMBER 1997
Hello, how's everyone doin'?  What? why can't I hear you?  Any way, we're just coming off some time away, and on Nov 17th we return to action.  Here are some of our upcoming shows.
Nov 17th, we play at the "New Improved"Pepper's on Ravine Rd.  From what I've heard, their changing everything from the big haired 80's schlock rock bands to local original music.  We're going to be one of the first bands to test the waters.  I believe it's 18 and over and LINT is playing with us here (they're a great band).  So if you can make it.  I'd like to see you there!  For more info call (?).
Nov 21st, we will be back at Millennia on westnedge.  This has to be one of the most fun places to play (and the cover is so cheap).  This one's all ages and the peach italian soda kicks ass.  Questions?  Call (?)
Dec 3rd, we'll debut at HARVEY'Son Burdick.  I've never played here before, but I think that it'll be an excellent show.  Also on the bill are Catch 22 andScarlet.  It's 21 and up and if you want to know more call (?).
Unprecedented, NEW YEARS EVE (Dec 31st) we are playing a special "low doe show" at MILLENNIAon Westnedge with LINT.  It's one hell of a bill, all ages and probably the least expensive thing you'll find to do on NEW YEARS.
Also, we've been picked up by 89.1 WIDR fm, they have quite a few of our tracks (including a bunch of unreleased songs).  Here's  they're schedule, so please call them and ask 'em to play your favorite PAWN song for you.
[schedule unavailable - outdated]
Our "new" tape "now people" is only available at shows, and it's only $2 right now.  That's it for now, but keep an eye on the newspapers for shows that weren't printed here.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
see ya at the shows!

MAY 1998
Hey - You - How ya been?  Me, You wouldn't believe me if I told you.  We've been playing some awesome shows, and I'm glad we've been able to meet so many of you lately.  I recently realized how much of the state we've been covering, so I want to say howdy to y'all that live outside of our regular playing area, and I hope to see all of you again soon.
At a couple of our most recent shows some of you have gotten to meet our new Bassist - STEVE STONE.   His first show with us was at HARVEY'S ON THE MALL in Kalamazoo, it was our first headlining show there, and by the way, IT ROCKED!!  And more recently we were at MILLENNIAin Portage, We played with PRIMORDIAL SOUP(check 'em out, they're very cool!).
Our next couple of shows are:
May 29 World Tree Center - Kalamazoo Mall
June 5 Richland Community Hall - Richland MI
In more recent news, Millennia in Portage will be reopening shortly, under the name Jones Soda Co. and we hope to be playing there again real soon.  If you have any questions give 'em a call at (?) or stop by the new location at 2925 S. Westnedge (the old Pizza Hut) in the next couple of weeks.
Once again, if we haven't played in your area lately, and you'd like to see us again, let us know, and we'll do what we can.  You can call us at (?).  Make sure you leave your name and phone number.
Have you ever wanted to be in a band?  Well, here is you chance.  We are having a song writing contest for our mailing list members.  All you have to do is write a set of lyrics and send them to us by July 1st.  The winner will be notified when chosen, and if it works out we'd like to have them on stage with us the first time we play their song.
Till next time, have a great one and we'll
see ya at the shows!

NOVEMBER 1998
I see you, have you seen us lately?
What's that?  You thought we were gone?
Hell No!
Anyone who's seen us lately may have noticed a difference.  If not go get your eyes checked - pronto. You see, we were scheduled to play at Harvey's on the Mall (in Kalamazoo) on September 2, to be quickly followed by an appearance at "The 14th Annual Labor Day Weekend Battle of the Bands" on Sept. 4th, and all of the sudden Joe showed his true colors.  He quit on us hours before the Harvey's show, saying he just didn't feel like playing anymore, his heart just wasn't in it.
BUT THE SHOW MUST GO ON
So we simply set out on the search for that great white drummer.  What we found amazes me to this day.  It was Gus Cartman, formerly of  IZZAT HYTE, Logan & the 9'ers, Poser, & Empty.
Gusmade his debut on Sept. 26th, where we played and awesome show with the phenomenalPrimordial Soup.
Now that things are back to "NORMAL" , we have resumed our play schedule,  it is on the next page, so hang it on the fridge.

Another exciting tidbit of news for ya,  WIDR 89.1 fm has picked up our new stuff, and has been playing it in the morning.  I'm not sure what songs they have, but I have had select members of humanity telling me that we were on the radio again.  So call 'em up, and ask 'em to play us, they might have some of our previously unreleased tracks for your listening enjoyment!  They're number is (?).

so as the old cliché goes
see ya at the shows!

FEBRUARY 1999

HEY! it's been a while huh?
well, it will all be worth the wait.
We have been working on our web page,
and it should be up and running by the time you get this!
I'd like to apologize toPrimordial Soup, Izzat Hyte, and each and every one of you who showed up to see the show at the World Tree Centerin Kalamazoo on Nov. 21.  We did have confirmation of that show, and the person that was supposed to show up to open the doors didn't, but we've got that straightened out now.
However, to make it up to everybody who showed up, there was a free show at theRichland Community Hall on Friday December 4th. The bill included us, Primordial Soup, and H8.  This was a fantastic show, these are two of the best bands around.  If we would have had more notice we would have informed all of you, 'cause this was a show that none of you should have missed.  I'm going to try to arrange it so there will be another show with these bands again sometime in the near future.
On November 22nd, we made our way back to Harvey's on the Mall, and met a band calledAbusing Troy, and this was a pretty darn good show.  I'd never seen Abusing Troy before, but they did impress the snot outta me, and I think this is another band everyone should be checkin' out..
Then on Nov. 27th we headed on over to The Sonic Room in Kalamazoo where we played withH8, and I do have to say that we have been very lucky to be able to play with so many excellent bands lately, 'cause this one was another killer!
After the Richland Hall show, we took the rest of December off.  Then we went out and kicked some ass at Harvey's on the Mall in Kalamazoo on Jan 6th.
BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR UPCOMING SHOWS AT STRYKER'SIN BATTLE CREEK, THE HIGHLANDER IN GRAND RAPIDS, & HARVEY'SIN KALAMAZOO, to name a few.
We are also talking with the people from The Bob, Calypso's, Club Soda, Czar's, Gang Plank, The Intersection, Landshark, & Sluggo's (hopefully something will pan out with all of these!)

IF ANY OF YOU KNOW OF ANY OTHER CLUBS THAT YOU'D LIKE TO SEE US COME TO, LET US KNOW AND WE'LL SEE WHAT WE CAN DO!!!!
I know I write to you a lot about all the great bands around, and if there is ever a time that you can get out to see a show, and we aren't playing, I think you should head out and see some of these bands.  ABUSING TROY, BEOWULF SCANTRON TEST, BERWER, H8, LINT, LOVE MUFFIN, LOW FREQUENCY TUNING, PRIMORDIAL SOUP, & THE SPEAKEASIES.  These are currently some of the best bands around, so go see 'em.

Next on the agenda:

TUE FEB 2nd
HARVEY'S ON THE MALL
416 S. Burdick St.
Downtown Kalamazoo

SAT FEB 6th

MARCH 1999
We went back to Pepper's in Kalamazoo where we were supposed to play with Kentucky punkers - FETISH, on Jan 27th.  Unfortunately, they couldn't make it, and we ended up playing two sets (something we never do).  It was good to be back there again (I guess).
Then we were at Harvey's on the Mall in Kalamazoo on February 2nd.  We met a band named the Krisco Lockets, and these guys just kicked so much ass.  They're one of my favorite local bands already, I've been listening to their tape a bunch and these guys just flat out rock.  CHECK 'EM OUT!!!
On February 6th we were at the World Tree Center, and I'd first like to apologize to all of you who showed up for either us or Primordial Soup and left when you saw who the opening act was.  I had no idea that so many of you felt so strongly about them.  Rest assured, I don't think we'll be playing with them again, and I'm not going to get specific, but the other band fucked up the whole damn thing.  It ended up costing us a lot of money and possibly the only all ages place in Kalamazoo there is to play.  I really wanted to help these guys out (I was pretty good friends with one of them for a while), but as far as I'm concerned, I'll never help them again.  Good Luck Guys.
I know there are quite a few of you on our mailing list that were at that show and you know who I'm talking about, just don't be pissed off at us for what happened.  We talked to them before the show and told them not to do it, but I guess it was all a big joke, right.  I mean, hey, It was all taken care of (by us anyway), but if the only all ages place in Kalamazoo won't let bands in there anymore, you won't hurt my feelings if you tell them where to go.  Most people I talked to about it will never go to see them again, I know I won't.
On March 19th we made our debut in Chicago Il. at Phyliss' Musical Inn (which kinda kicked ass), but on a sadder note, that same date, Primordial Soup played they're last show.  They will be sadly missed, and I wish them all the best of luck in whatever they do in the future.  R.I.P. a bad ass band!!!!!

APRIL 1999
Toward the end of March, we parted ways with drummer Gus Cartman, he will be missed. As a great friend, I hope he finds the perfect band for him (without being "killed"[not literally of course]). Anyway, best of luck to ya bud!
Our current drummer (who is filling in 'till July) many of you will recognize, as he has been around the scene before. His name is being withheld currently, but we are definately making the best of it. However, we are on the great white hunt for a drummer again. If you are a drummer, or know a drummer (preferably over 21), e-mail us at @gateway.net, or you can snail mail us at  c/o L.B.P. 5944 N. 39th St. Augusta MI, 49012.
On April 2, we played the Big Horse in Chicago IL. I must say, it rocked, probably one of our best shows ever. While we were playing, the booking agent from the Double Door (the Rolling Stones played there recently) was walking by, and he stopped to check us out. He took our booking person down to the club, gave her his card, and talked about wanting us to play there!!!!! We don't have a scheduled date yet, but I'm already geeked about that show.
On April 6th, we made our way back to Harvey's on the Mall in Kalamazoo MI. Also on the bill were Modene and Elevator Action. This was a pretty damn good show. I love it when we have shows with other bands that our this good. It was pretty hard to follow Modene though, they pretty much left the crowd in awe, and the only thing that was left to say was "Hello Kalamazoo, we are .
April 8th, 's debut at the Intersection in Grand Rapids, I had a lot of fun playing at this place (even though I don't think we made it through a single song without fucking it up, I guess it was one of "those nights"). We played after Ill Face (which is always a hard band to follow), and the head liners that night were Pauper's Field, so this was another cool show to be involved in.
Our April 26th show at Club Soda in Kalamazoo MI was cancelled, and will be rescheduled shortly, when information becomes available, I'll put it on the upcoming shows page.
On March 4th, we were back a Harvey's on the Mall in Kalamazoo again. We played with the Krisco Lockets (OHHHH YEAHHHH!!!!!!!). They kicked ass, then we had to find a way to follow them. We thought about it for about 3 seconds and decided - FUCK IT!! We'll just go up there and have some fun. We played alot of stuff we hadn't played in a while, and I even played "unpolished" the way it was recorded on "NOW PEOPLE". It was a blast, and one of our highest paying shows ever at Harvey's.
The Stryker's Lounge show that was scheduled for May 7 was cancelled because they sold the club a week before. So if you showed up for that one, you have our apologies, but we didn't find out until the day of the show. We also just aquired a date at Czars in St. Joe MI, but I don't know the date for that one yet, so check the upcoming shows page periodically to see if there is any info available. On another note, there have been an entire 3 people who have found "hide-a-home", the secret  page that takes an in-depth look into the band, it's members, former members, and they're lives. when you find it (and it's not easy to find) let us know, you could be the next lucky winner!
until next time
see ya at the shows!

JUNE 1999

HELLO AGAIN

August 4-Harvey's on the Mall in Kalamazoo MI, August 13-?????? in Chicago Il, September 2-Kraftbrau in Kalamazoo MI,

There is currently a movement going on in our government that seems to me is trying to take away our right to listen to independent music on the radio. If you think this sucks as much as I do, click this and sign the letter that it leads to. This letter is going to local radio stations all over to let them know that we don't think it's cool that corporate America and our government try to tell us what we can listen to.

Or click this sentence for more information.

HELLO AGAIN,
Our booking person has been hospitalized for some time, so we are going to have a rather slow time coming up. We are scheduled to play at Czars in St. Joe MI, Club Soda in Kalamazoo MI, Harvey's on the Mall in Kalamazoo MI, but I don't know the dates for any of these shows, so check the upcoming shows page periodically to see if there is any info available.
We played at the B.E. Henry building in Marshall with a bunch of other bands on May 21st. Also on the bill were some of my local faves the Krisco Lockets and 7 letter alphabet, along with a couple of new bands that I hadn't heard of before, and that was very cool.
We finally found the great white drummer. Don't forget, If you want info about anything, you can always e-mail us at @gateway.net, or you can snail mail us at  c/o L.B.P. 5944 N. 39th St. Augusta MI, 49012.
On another note, there have been an entire 12 people who have found "hide-a-home", the secret  page that takes an in-depth look into the band, it's members, former members, and they're lives. when you find it (and it's kinda tricky to find) let us know, you could be the next lucky winner!

AUGUST 1999
HAPPY BIRTHDAY AGAIN!!

We just finished our second year as a band. It seems this is the perfect month for celebration, and I am still blown away by the things that are happening. At the beginning of the month, we gained a drummer who has already made a tremendous impact. Ryan Smith (formerly of the Krisco Lockets) is now in PAWN.
We have played a total of 55 shows in 108 weeks as a band, that's about a show every two weeks on average, which obviously we haven't been doing lately, but within a couple of months we will be back to our normal playing schedule (if not better than before).
On August 4th, we were back at Harvey's on the Mall in Kalamazoo MI. This show was more or less an audition for Ryan, and it was a crazy show. There were dancing girls and oddities galore. During one of the songs, some of the girls decided they were going to dance on me, and during the verse I was bumped pretty good, my mic stand went crashing to the floor. I darted over to Steve's mic stand for the rest of the verse. My stand was eventually restored, and I finished it out in my original location. On a darker note, some moron took it a little to far, and decided that this was supposed to be a real orgy instead of a time to rejoice for the people in attendance. He began harassing our booking agent and exposing himself, causing this huge scene that almost broke into a "bar room brawl". That was insane. Also on the bill that night were The Covilles & Flood.
Then it was on to Sidelines in Chicago IL on August 13th (Ryan's first show as a member of the band). We got there to find that it was a sports bar (they had just started doing live music), and we thought this show was going to be a disaster. We were supposed to be headlining this joint where there was nobody that looked like they wanted to hear us, so we decided to play a really short set and get out of there as quick as possible. Then I found out that my pedal board had blown, I felt like I was riding on the Titanic. We were ready to start, and as I looked to the crowd, I realized everyone was standing there with they're arms crossed with a look of hate wiped upon their faces. We began to play, the crowd started getting into it. We kept going, they started cheering. We came to a close, they began chanting! All I could hear were the deafening chants of "PAWN", "encore", and "play more". I must say that this was our best experience in Chicago yet.
There is so much exciting stuff on the way, so until next time -
see ya at the shows!

SEPTEMBER 1999
WELCOME
WE ARE CURRENTLY SEEKING A SERIOUS SECOND GUITARIST

I don't know how to explain the things that have been happening to us lately. We are going into the studio on Sunday Sept. 26th to record "Garbage Man" since we haven't laid that track yet. We just finished a crazy string of shows, and after the studio we are going to have a full 12 days off. It is amazing, last year at this time, 12 days off was nothing new, but now, thanks to you, 12 days off isn't very common. I want to thank all of you for everything that has been going on, and keep supporting local music!

Ryan has been kicking so much butt (my P.R. friendly statement for the day), and I can't express how happy I am to have him aboard. On Wednesday the 22nd, we played a surprise show that went to benefit abused children, and to our surprise 103.3 fm (WKFR) in Kalamazoo did an interview with us after the show. I wonder if any of you heard that? I know most of you didn't even know that we were playing that show, but hey, neither did we untill the day of.

Today, Friday September 24th, 1999 our hit counter reached 2500 hits. Once again, Thank you! We have a bunch of shows lining up, some of them on the same day, so I don't know which ones we'll be playing, but stay tuned to the upcoming shows page, I'll put them up as soon as I find them out. We are still looking for a few lucky people that can find hide a home. Once we get 2 more legitimate entries, we will hold that drawing to win some free crap (not literal). If you have been looking but just can't seem to find it, don't give up, it is hidden somewhere in one of our pages.

Onto something else. Our CD is moving along nicely, and I do want to state that demos is once again sold out, and there are very few copies of now people left. We have been talking about not reissuing them again. That's about all the time that I'm going to take up for now,
see ya at the shows!

NOVEMBER 1999
WE ARE CURRENTLY SEEKING A SERIOUS BASSIST

Tuesday November 30th, 1999 our hit counter reached 3000 hits.

Well, it happened, Steve Stone has left the band. He said that it just wasn't fun anymore, and that his eight year old son thinks he hates him. The oddest part is that how can the band come in conflict with your personal life when you don't do anything but play the shows (including loading and unloading the trailer)? Then again, why would you want to unload when you know you won't be there to practice? In my opinion, he took the title of our latest release a little to seriously, he almost did actually PAWN EVERYTHING. Including his practice equipment, then he started getting pissed off at me because I wouldn't let him take a bunch of my stuff home with him. I guess it's a good thing that I trusted my gut instinct on that one. His story has been moved to hide-a-home, find it if you can.

On a brighter note, we started working on our first video this month. Due to the unbelievable popularity or "Hair of the Tongue", we have decided that this will be the playground for our first endeavor in the field. I've seen the first 30 seconds of it, and I think it's great. There is a sense of humor in it that most of you never get to see, not to mention gratuitous carnivorism. When it comes out, you'll probably notice that Steve is only in there in "live" footage, (he didn't show up for his shots either).

WIDR 89.1 FM in Kalamazoo now has a copy of "EVERYTHING", so call 'em up and request something off it. Their number is (616) 387-6303.

We'll be taking the rest of the Millennium off I believe, I think all shows have been postponed, and we will be starting fresh in the new year. Pending a permanent replacement, Sean Game-Brown (from Crack Baby) has been kind enough to fill in for us. Swing by their site on our other bands page to check them out.

so until next time -
see ya at the shows!

JANUARY 2000
THANKS FOR VISITING

WE ARE CURRENTLY SEEKING A SERIOUS BASSIST

Household tip of the month, if you have something electronic (like a VCR) that isn't y2k compliant, you can set it for the year 1972, it's the same calendar year as 2000, then just remember that it's not 1972 again, but at least it will be Friday when it says that it's Friday.
We have recently been contacted by Septic Shock Records, and it sounds like we will be included on one of their compilations due out in 2000. Consequently, we are going into the studio very soon to lay down "VICE". Since we don't have a permanent bassist yet, the bass player for this one will probably surprise you all, but it shouldn't, can you guess who it is?
We have shows currently lining up, and will return to action in this month (since the world didn't come to an end yet, just hold on believers, maybe in the year 3000). I'm very excited about one show in particular, at Kraftbrau in Kalamazoo Michigan we will be playing with Burning Tent Revival (formerly KILL SWITCH). I've watched members of this band progress and prosper through the years, any of you that are going to this one will know why I'm so excited. Check out our upcoming shows page for complete details to each show as I find them out.
Also, our latest release "EVERYTHING" is currently sold out (along with most of our merchandise). We will be getting more CD's T-shirts, and Bumper Stickers made soon, bare with us. Some of you may still get the original cover for "EVERYTHING", as I believe there are still some CD's on the way with this sleeve, and anyone that has the original sleeve will notice some changes with the new one.
We are hiding a bootleg version of a song called Q & A on our page, it's not the best version in the world, but I just stumbled upon it on my hard drive and figured I would load it up in a hidden location. As always, when you are in our area, you can call WIDR FM 89.1 and request a song from "EVERYTHING", their number is 616-387-6303.
We are currently in the beginning stages of setting up a southern U.S. tour to take place from November 2000 through February 2001. We will be leaving shortly after Thanksgiving, and our tour will tentatively start in the states of Indiana & Missouri in November, followed by Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California, & Arizona in December. In January we will be stopping in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, & Florida. February, or final month out will consist of visits to Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky & Ohio.
Pending a permanent replacement, Sean Game-Brown (from Crack Baby) has been kind enough to fill in for us.
Swing by their site and check them out.
So, until next time -
see ya at the shows!

WE ARE CURRENTLY SEEKING A SERIOUS BASSIST

Hey, we finally got some more hate mail. If you want to tell 'em what you think of the opinions expressed, swing by and click on the name.

We are also please to announce that we are now an affiliate of indiebiz.com, they have worked with promotion campaigns for major label acts such as Bush, Lords of Acid, Blue Oyster Cult, and the Lightning Seeds. Click the link for more info on their services.
Fittingly so, Tuesday February 29th, 2000 (leap year day) our hit counter reached 4000 hits. Not only is that a once in 4 year day, but one year that we've been on line. Thank you!!!!!!!

Hello again, It's been a couple of months since I updated the newsletter, so I figured it was high time to do it again. Right now there's not a lot going on, without a definite replacement in the bassist department, we've been taking it kinda slow. We do have some of our upcoming shows on that page, and some of you that have been to a couple of our most recent shows may have seen some familiar faces.
Sean Game-Brown (from Richland's infamous Crack Baby) has been doing the majority of the filling in on bass, but some of you may have witnessed Gus Cartman (our former drummer) playing bass at some of our recent outings. Surprise, just cause our cards are down at the moment doesn't mean that we can't keep pulling tricks out of our hat.
We are beginning to post tentative dates and cities for our upcoming winter tour. You can check out our upcoming shows page for approximate dates. We should be leaving some time in November of this year, and returning sometime around the end of February 2001. We think this will be a great experience, and should be a blast (if we don't kill each other by the time we return).
Currently we are still trying to find out the details about the Septic Shock Records compilation CD. We were contacted a while back about inclusion on one of their releases, and went into the studio to record "Vice", and there is now a bootleg demo version of that song on our songs page. The actual version is waiting to be released on that comp., but the feedback that we've received from the few that have heard it sounds pretty promising. Overall, I'd say that we are pretty happy with it. This will be Ryan's first recorded release with us.
Recently, one of our fans that we'd see a lot when we played the Richland Hall shows has left us. I can't say that he was one of my best friends or anything, but he seemed to be a really good guy, and that show was dedicated in his memory. He will definitely be missed every time we go there, and I can honestly say that it wasn't like it used to be, but our best wishes go out to his "real" friends and family. C-ya Ben.
On that note, I'm gonna jet, so...............
see ya at the shows!

For reasons that will not be disclosed at this time, Ryan Smith is no longer the drummer in PAWN as of April 12, 2000. You've probably noticed that we played a show shortly after that, and say how?????? We'll let's just say it happened, and he has already been replaced, so keep your eyes out for some surprises. We are looking at returning to our regular show schedule hopefully soon, we just have some bugs to work out of the bands system, and until then, we will stay at a very small playing routine, so if you get the chance to see us, take it, I don't know when you'll get the chance again.
I'd like to take a second to thank Sean Game-Brown (from Crack Baby) for filling in for us while we needed him. He and his band have been extremely helpful and supportive, and it is greatly appreciated. Speaking of which, we have been mulling over the idea of a split single with Crack Baby and would like your feed back on this. If you have an opinion on the split single, e-mail us and let us know what you think!
We will be appearing on the alian records compilation soon, I don't know the title of it yet, but I believe it will be on CD, and there will probably be a total of something like 10 bands on it. Supplies will be extremely limited, so once they are gone - they are gone! If you want to order one of these, swing by our merchandise page and see if it's posted yet. When it is, print out the page, fill it out and follow the directions on the page.
The last couple of shows have been rather disappointing, but I would like to thank the die hards for their attendance. There are some pretty big surprises on the way in the near future, and anyone that caught us in Chicago on April 15th knows exactly what I'm talking about. Just when you think you know the answers, PAWN changes the questions!
Until next time:
see ya at the shows!

JUNE 2000
Hello, wow there are some bizarre happenings in the world of lately. Some of you will think you are having a bad flashback, and some of you will have a fond reminiscence the next time you see us. Bookings will remain sporadic for a while still, but I will tell you when you do see us again you will definitely recognize what (and who) you are seeing. Currently that's all that I am at liberty to say about this, but change (obviously for the better since it couldn't get much worse then the last half year) is on the way.
Something I want to pose a question as to is a curiosity that has been on my mind for the last couple of months. WHAT IS A CORPORATE WHORE????? Does it mean that everything you want to do is strictly for monetary profit? Is it just a way to acquire fame? Trying to fix something that wasn't broken before you touched it to try to make it something it's simply not? Putting responsibility on hold for personal gain? Doing anything for recognition? How about attempting to sell out? Is selling out simply greed or a sign of weakness? What constitutes selling out?
I'm not going to go into details on my questions here, but it is something that has been bugging me lately. In my opinion it is kinda like attempting to sell out something that is not available to be (bought or) sold. I think a corporate whore has no heart! Attempting to take away from the big picture, (stupidity comes to mind) trying things that someone with experience already knows doesn't work in a feeble attempt to be a rich and famous rock star.
I think this whole thing is about feelings. If we can play a show and get an emotion about that particular show, or leave someone in the crowd with such an emotion (love, hate or boredom), then I think we've done exactly what this is all supposed to be about! If someone comes up to me at a show and wants say a guitar body signed, should I sign it because it is recognition (fame) or because they are obviously a fan and want a momento? If you ask my opinion it must be the latter, and I think if it's for any reason other than that, then it's more than likely the wrong reason.
I'd like some of your inputs on some of these questions, if you could take a moment and
e-mail us it would be much appreciated. Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox now and let you get on with whatever it was that you were doing. Thanks for your time.

AUGUST 2000
On August 8th our hit counter reached 5,000 hits, thanks, and here is another year down!!! August marks 3 years for PAWN . Probably the coolest thing going on right now is that we are in contract negotiations right now with 1-def-ear-ent records out of Delaware. I guess we'll soon see what happens there! We are still taking it pretty slow on bookings, but it is anticipated that that will soon change. We are currently searching for a serious permanent drummer, so we can stop the hassle of using temporaries all the time. Just when we thought that would never be a problem again, all the sudden it was once again. If you are, or you know a serious drummer that is capable of doing music (hopefully as a full time gig) we can be reached at
PAWN. The current line up of PAWN is still being kept under wraps, but if you get the chance to check us out, I guess you'll know who we are! On another related note, there is info on this (along with the answer to the current contest) in hide-a-home, so find it if you can.
Any way, I'm gonna keep it short and sweet for now, so, Until next time:

SEPTEMBER 2000
Well, the big news is that we recently signed with
1-def-ear records out of Athens Georgia, and things couldn't be going better. Since then, we have released the remaining copies of the original pressing of our debut L.P. "EVERYTHING", and a split E.P. (featuring "VICE & HATE ME KILL ME"- both previously unreleased) with CRACK BABY. Our shirts should be in at any time now, and you will be able to purchase them on our order form, and very shortly here we will have the re-release of "EVERYTHING" (with new artwork, newly remixed versions, and better sound quality) in, and available for order.
Our tour schedule is rapidly changing all of the sudden because the court system and lawyers both suck ass, but we are trying our damnedest to pull off some sort of tour this winter, it will probably be a lot more crash and burn ourselves into oblivion then originally planned, we are going to try to make it as quick, and non-stop as possible, and I'm sure that we will all be about ready to die by the time we get back. All the dates will be posted on our upcoming shows page once they are all changed and confirmed.
I think there will be a noticeable difference in our set lists at the upcoming shows. I'm not going into a lot of detail here, but there are massive changes in the works in the PAWN camp at the current moment, and from the recent response that we've gotten from the "insiders" I think it'll be a pleasant surprise.
There have been a whole 67 of you to find hide-a-home, and those of you that have may have noticed that there are lots of new "exclusive" pics of the members of PAWN, and there are pretty much complete lyrics, guitar & bass tabs, along with mp3's and real audio for a vast majority of our songs, rare live tracks, and info about us that you may never otherwise know!
On Saturday September 23rd, I'm going back into the studio to record the lyrics for the studio version of "VICE" for a rare version that will only be released on a certain pressing of exclusive copies, that may be made available as a contest prize in the near future, so keep your eyes on the contest page, and see if you can pull it off!
Anyway, that's about all the time that I'm gonna take up for now, THANK YOU!!!!!!
Until next time:

DECEMBER 2000
It seems that we have finally found our drummer. Any of you that have been to the last couple of shows may have seen us play with a different drummer for a song or two during the set. Let me take a moment to introduce you to Brian Stoops. At this point it looks like brian is going to fill the vacancy on the PAWN throne permanently, and I would like to thank Kyle Russell and the Clarendon Park Rangers for helping us through the "drummerless" period. There have been a couple of different drummers that had filled in for us recently, but Kyle went above and beyond the call of duty. Hats off.

We will be taking some time off from playing shows for a while (possibly until February) to make sure that everything is working out all right, after all, we want to be able to give you your money's worth when you come to see us.

Our merchandise stock is finally full again, this is the first time in a long time, and I don't know how long it will last. If there are any items that you wish to order, you can find them on our order form.
Also, we have just added streaming mp3's to our audio page, and improved the real audio files to load and play a lot faster.

There haven't been many of you to find hide-a-home, but those of you that have may have noticed that there are "exclusive" pics and profile pages of the members of PAWN, and there are pretty much complete lyrics, guitar & bass tabs, along with mp3's and real audio for a vast majority of our songs, rare live tracks, past newsletters, old fliers and info about us that you may never otherwise know!

Anyway, that's about all the time that I'm gonna take up for now, THANK YOU!!!!!!

MARCH 2001

On March 1st, our hit counter reached 6,000 hits all because of you, from all of us - Thank You!!!

Hello there, I know it's been quite a while since I've updated this newsletter. There has been some pretty crazy goings on in the world of PAWN lately. First off, we have purposely taken off all shows since November 29, 2000. We have now had time to fine tune a whole bunch of stuff that needed to be worked out. I think you'll notice the next time you see us that there will probably be some changes, including some songs that you have never heard before. Yes, we have been working on some new material.

After many long hours spent in the band room, we are now discussing recording a new song, and as of right now, we aren't quite sure what will be done with it, but I'm sure there will be some way you can hear it. My thought is maybe something like a hidden song on our page that will only be available on line for a while.

I wanted to express to everyone my disappointment in the Napster thing. Recently, I've been running across some people who are getting our songs off Napster, and that's what I think this whole thing should be about. There are too many greedy bands in the world that are messing it up for all the others. If there is any way you can support Napster in the fight against the MACHINE, please do so, and help keep music FREE. The record companies have hired lobbyists and made big donations to politicians to promote their interests. You need to make your voice heard. Tell Congress that file sharing over the Internet should not be shut down. Contact Congress by Email or with a toll-free call (1-877-SHARING) to let them know how you feel! Contact Congress by email or with a toll-free call or Join the Napster Action Network

Our merchandise is going at a pretty steady pace, I wanted to say thank you, and if you don't have yours yet, you may want to order it online. There is a chance that we may not have some of it when you check us out at a show, and I don't know how long it will last. If there are any items that you wish to order, you can find them on our order form.

There haven't been many of you to find hide-a-home, but those of you that have may have noticed that just by doing so, you may be able to win some free merchandise. There are also "exclusive" pics and profile pages of the members of PAWN, and there are pretty much complete lyrics, guitar & bass tabs, along with mp3's and real audio for a vast majority of our songs, rare live tracks, past newsletters, old fliers, info on past shows and stuff about us that you may never otherwise know (or want to)!

That's about all I'm gonna say for now.
Until next time:

MAY 2001

Hello again, any of you that attended some of our past few shows probably noticed the addition of our new guitarist Nick Keates and drummer Brian Stoops. They each have their own page on the site now, and you can contact them through their e-mail addresses. Shortly, they should have their personal hide-a-home pages up, and you can get the juiciest "soap opera style" dirt on them and make fun of them the next time you see them. The show that was at the Richland Hall was their first with PAWN in what I'm sure will be many. We want to thank all of you for a great time.

We'll soon be working on some new material (for the first time in 2 months!!!!!), it may sound a little different than your use to hearing from us with the new range of influences in the band. Maybe that will help to keep our live sets fresh when you come to see us, and maybe you'll even get to hear something that we have never even heard before. Rest assured though, we are still going to sound exactly like Bjork singing in the bathtub with her head under water while she's taking L.S.D.

We are currently looking at adding a lighting person and sound person to our entourage. We have been talking with Buddy about the lights, and sean about the sound, it looks like everything will work out fine, and they'll be getting the stuff down soon enough to make it to the upcoming shows in the near future, so hopefully our next few dates will be quality, be sure to check them out.

We're starting to run low on the original pressing of "EVERYTHING", so if you don't have yours, and want one, I strongly suggest picking it up soon. You may want to order it online, however there is a chance that we may have it when you check us out at a show, but I don't know how long they'll last. If there is any of our merchandise that you wish to order, you can find them on our order form.
Until next time:

Hello again. As of this month, we are now entering our fourth year in existence, & we reached 7,000 hits this month. Looking back at it all, I am still in awe. Since the beginning we've been able to release two E.P.s, an L.P., and a split E.P., gotten airplay, played about 100 shows all over the place and still survived. All because of you! Thank you. Recently, we parted ways with drummer Brian Stoops. He is planning on moving to Florida and starting a new life. We'd like to wish him well in his future endeavors. The show at Harvey's on the Mall in September will be his going away party. On other news, Buddy Dittre (former light guy) is no longer with us. There was a difference in opinions that I believe caused enough of a strain to be a large part of his leaving. Also, you may have noticed that it doesn't say 1-def-ear recording artists on our home page anymore. The label has recently closed it's doors, so as of now we are back to being d.i.y. (good, bad or otherwise). We are currently looking for a label though, so hopefully we'll find something soon that works with us. TO BE CONTINUED........
Until next time:
see ya at the shows!

NOVEMBER 2001

This is going to be a rather short newsletter for now, but here goes. We are currently preparing to go into the studio within the next couple of months to begin work on our much anticipated next record. Along with some of the stuff that we've been doing live recently, we've also been working on some new songs that may appear on the next record.
It seems that Nick Keates has decided to take a hiatus from the band, I'm not quite sure if he is planning on leaving, or just decided to take some time off? He hasn't been to a practice in about three months, but we have been in sporadic contact with him. Any of you that have been to the last couple of shows have probably noticed his abscence.
After taking the month of November off to do a little restructuring, we will be returning to the stage in December. At this point, it will be as the three piece band that everybody has grown to know. We're kicking it off with some shows in Kalamazoo and two shows in Grand Rapids within a weeks time, so we are planning on seeing you all very soon. Any who------
Until next time:
see ya at the shows!

DECEMBER 2001

To start on a good note, our hit counter reached 8,000 hits this month, THANK YOU!! Also, we just did a t.v. taping of one of our recent shows that will be aired on WOTV Channel 41 (Cable Channel 4) on a Saturday night in February of 2002, when we get more info, we'll pass it on to you. Now on a more somber note.
We are asking everyone to pay close attention to what you about to read, we just received this e-mail from Matt Dorbin (an "insider" on Kalamazoo goings on). Here is a copy of what was sent to us:

"Well, guess what, everyone? Kalamazoo has fallen victim once again to the anti-rock n' roll curse that seems to still be hanging over it's (our) head(s). That's right, Harvey's On The Mall is NO MORE. At least, not how it was, anyway. This past Sunday, the owners (everyone's favorite rich dickheads, the Hinman Co.) locked the doors, fired everyone (some of whom might have been your friends) and banished us dirty people to cold winter Midwest streets with no place to go to hang out, see good bands or play in one yourself.
It seems they are going to turn Harvey's into a more wholesome TGI Friday's style frat bar. Unfortunately, I am NOT kidding. Effective now, all shows that were booked for Dec. 2001 and beyond are CANCELED. Merry Christmas Kalamazoo!!! First Flipside Records this year and now this. Makes you wonder why you still live here, huh?
So where do we go from here? The Space still (thankfully) exists and I'm sure good bands, local and national, will continue to play there. But where do we go to get stupid drunk and get our live music fix? Or even just to get together with some friends for a little fun? Club Soda? Yeah right. If you're so inclined, I suppose. With the exception of the God Bullies/Thought Industry/Los Inyecteros show this year, when was the last time you wanted to go hang out there? The Up And Under? Might
as well go to the NEW AND IMPROVED Harvey's when they reopen. The Green Top? Not a bad visit, but can get a little bit hectic if you stay too long. Bottom line, we're FUCKED for the moment. Any body got a few hundred thousand to million dollars to start there own club? Having been friends with most of the employees at Harvey's, as well as booking bands and playing there, I am VERY upset. I really didn't feel comfortable at most other bars in town. Maybe that's a personal problem, but that's how I feel. You didn't have to dress up (unless you wanted), or wait in long lines, or take off your hat, or have a college ID and a secret handshake to get in like some other establishments in town. You could get down and dirty and have a good time. It's another case of taking something for granted in life and then it leaves you forever. Are we paying attention, class?
Anyway, thanks to everyone who came out to the shows or supported Harvey's in some way (time for a down payment on a new liver, me thinks.) As far as Black Jack Productions is concerned, I'm not finished yet, but I am "on hold" as they say until shit gets figured out.
To any of the bands on this mailing list that I have had the pleasure to work with in the past, please feel to contact me next time you're in the area. There WILL be other places to play, just not this month.
I will keep you all posted of future events and thanks again. See you somewhere down the trail.
Matt Dorbin Black Jack Productions Kalamazoo, MI "Dirty" Rock And Roller."

WOW, what do you think of that? One of our favorite 21 and over clubs is now no more! We just played there 2 days before this decision was made (Friday night - our first Friday there ever), not to mention, bands from every city I can think of have played this historic venue, and yet some how, some where, the "Corporate Whore White Males" (ha ha ha) that command the "Land of the Free" with a fist of iron" (where's the joke in that now) have decided that it's there place to take away one of the last remaining "REAL" MUSIC CLUBS in the area. We want to encourage everyone to do anything that they can possibly do to get them to change their minds. I am not sure if this number will go through to the decision makers or not, but the clubs phone number was 616-349-8787, the address is 416 S. Burdick St. Kalamazoo MI 49001. Whether you call, write a letter, or maybe you even know one of these "GREAT DECISION MAKERS", please let them know what they are doing to all of us! It is time for all of us to stand up for ourselves, and quit buying this corporate crap that these suits keep shoveling our way!

Well, onto other news. Last month we told you that we are preparing to go into the studio to begin work on our much anticipated next record. We decided what better record to record than the one that you (our fans) want to hear. We have so many songs in our catalog at the moment that we aren't sure what we want to lay down. So now, we'll ask you what songs you'd like to see released. If you can think of a particular song or songs that you'd like to hear on the next record, please e-mail us here, so that we can see what you are interested in hearing.

Also, we have pretty much given up on Nick Keates making a return to the band after so many months of missing practices and shows, so as of now we will be starting the audition process for another second guitarist. For more information, please contact us!

Some of you may have noticed a difference in the line-up lately, well, after a couple of months of working with Mr. Kyle Russell (from C.P.R.) we have also been working with Nate Mclaughlin on the drums. Nate took over the throned position recently full time, and we wish to give Kyle the biggest of thanks for putting up with us for so long, and wish him the best of luck with C.P.R. in the future. However, I'm sure that this won't be the last time that you'll see Kyle performing with members of PAWN. We have been throwing around the idea of a side project lately, and we already have discussed him playing a role in this new band.

The latest news is: we were recently placed on the Stooge's (Grand Rapids MI) compilation disc comprised of bands that have played there. As of pressing, we aren't sure which song that they are putting on it, but I believe that it will be receiving airplay on the regional radio stations. The release date is slated for December 18, and there will be a cd release party on that date at the club. Any way........
Until next time:

see ya at the shows!

April 2002

Hello again.  Since we haven't updated this newsletter since December, there is a lot of stuff to post here, but we'll try to keep it short and simple.  Just wanted to drop a quick update, and let everyone know the goings on with the band as of late.
Some of you may have noticed the technical difficulties that we've been suffering at the shows the last couple of months.  Just wanted to assure you after both of Marc's guitar rigs went out (one at Harvey's in Kalamazoo, and one at Stooge's in Grand Rapids) and Steve's bass amp burned up (at the Space in Kalamazoo), everything has now been repaired, and is now ready to tear up stages as usual.  We're now working on a series of upcoming dates.
We have updated our P.A., and hammered out some bugs in the light system.  If any of you are interested in buying some of our old P.A. we are selling it.  If you are interested, e-mail us.
About a month ago, we parted ways with Nate Mclaughlin.  It was a hard decision to make, but it was decided that we weren't necessarily going in the same direction with him, so the search began for a new drummer.
We are getting close to finishing our upcoming L.P.  We've had some major hold ups in the studio, but after some arduous time spent on making everything just right, it's turning out wonderfully.  Be prepared to hear a lot of stuff that you've never heard before, as there are quite a few new songs that were recorded, whether they make the cut or not is anybody's guess.  It's looking like we're going to release 12 of the 18 recorded songs, and we are currently holding a contest for the songs that are going to make the record.  The ones that don't get released will probably end up on the B-sides of the singles, or upcoming compilations.

November 2002

YEAH YEAH, I KNOW, it's been quite some time since we last updated this, but rest assured, we aren't trying to keep you in the dark.
You may have noticed some "changes" (obviously for the better since the "drunk joke" has left) in the last couple of months, and due to these "changes" we are on the way to our best year yet!!!!  As of the writing of this, we are two shows away from the most shows that we've been able to do in a single year since 1998, and we owe it all to you!  Thank you!  However, we are still looking for a permanent bassist, so if you are interested, or if you know of anybody that would be interested in taking the spot, please drop us a line.
I've heard that the "new" record should be done in a couple of months, the bass tracks are still
in the process being recorded properly.  Once that's done, we're going to try to slam together a good mix, get it mastered, etc. and get it into your hands as soon as we possibly can. The ablum is tenatively titled "Up the River", and the track list will go something like PASSING OF TIME, SATIN, LIVING WHO'S LIFE, ALCOHOLIC'S BUDGET, LIPSTICK, MY SUPPORT, HERO IN ME, BLIND DEAF & DUMB, APRIL'S FOOL, OLD FLAME, KNEW & HEATER.
We're currently hashing out every single song on our set list, and very soon plan on starting to play some of the old favorites that haven't been making it to the set lists for a while. On a related note, we are also working on some more new material, and expect to be able to give you some new noise from our calloused selves by the end of the year.

On another note: Do you care about the local music scene?

If so, we thought that you would be interested to know that we are spearheading a boycott on a club in Grand Rapids MI.  The Club is called Buckin' Beavers and is located at 5401 S. Division.  The reason that we are asking for your support is simple, we believe that the people that run this club are only in the business of "live entertainment" to rape the bands that they get to play there and most importantly YOU - the great people that take the time out of their day to come out and support the clubs and bands that they like.  Our story goes as follows: We arrived at the club about 7:30, and we were told to be there by 8, ok, no problem so far.  They told us where to load in and where to set up, we did.  Then they ran sound check, we still thought everything was fine.
After sound check, about quarter to ten, we proceeded to go out to the van to make the set list for the evening, suddenly a group of security guys come out and began slinging accusations around like grease pit hash browns.  Now mind you, we are sitting in a well lit parking lot, with the doors open and all of the lights on in the van, and yet they decided that it was their place to "inspect" the van with flashlights and everything.  When they realized that they were barking up the wrong tree, they turned tail and walked back to the club to talk to some other guy.
At this point, more of them came back and one of them began barking "pack up your shit and get out of here!"  We were just like "What..... Why?"  and he replied with "don't ask questions.... I said pack up your shit and get out of here!".  After a couple of rounds of this, another one of them replied "don't shoot the messenger, we're just telling you what we were told".  So we proceeded inside to find out just exactly what was going on.  Oddly enough, we couldn't even get a uniform response.  We were told everything from "You guys fucked up the sound check" to "You weren't even supposed to be playing tonight".
Now keep in mind, we drove over an hour to get to this place, and were told that we were going to get $150 for our performance, which was ok by us as we will normally play for free many times a week since we love what we do, we even give away free cd's, T-shirts, etc. at the shows because we want people to have our stuff if they want it, and the people that like us appreciate that.
So at this point I'm pretty much stunned at what's going on.  We are trying to get our stuff loaded, and some of the guys in the band were understandably pissed off, so security was pretty much swarming, and the cops were called to observe the situation, I guess, not that we had anything to worry about.  But what we did have to worry about was all of the people that said they wanted to come see us that night.  We had just played two shows in that area in the last 4 days or so, and had a good number of people that were wanted to show up at that show.  What happened to them?
Did the bar let them in, and not tell them that they had pulled the band and just wanted their hard earned money?  Do you think the bar actually told them before hand that they were going to take their cover charge, and let them in expecting to see the band, only to have to spend more of their money on drinks without the entertainment?  Or do you think that they were honest with their "customers", the people that keep them in business, and sacrifice that nights income from the door?OF COARSE NOT!
In my opinion, this is one place that should be told "We don't want people like you looking out for what you think our needs are!"  I am asking you for your support in giving business to clubs that do look out for the needs of their customers, and avoid giving the dollars that we all work hard for everyday to places that are just there to take your money!  I'm not sure if they are aware of this, but there are many cool places in Grand Rapids that have many great bands for an inexpensive cover and cheap drinks!  I urge you to go to these clubs, instead of "Buckin' Beavers".

Thank you for your time
Marc
