And now a brief guide to stuff that stumps Yankees........

(Most of this you'll figure out after an episode or two but here are a couple of pointers.)

Her name is Assumpta.  It wasn't til after she died and I looked at web sites that I found out it wasn't Sumter (like the town in South Carolina).  

Other problematic names.  Niamh Quigley Egan, her first name is pronounced "Neev." The vet's name is Siobhan Mehigan. (pronounced "shi-vawn") The auto mechanic is Padraig (pronounced Porrig).  The rock musician's name is Enda.

Police patrolmen are called garda.

The expression from late in series three "on a hiding to nothing"  is Irish slang for wasting one's energy. (As an Irish person explained it, the literal meaning is to take a beating you don't deserve, or knocking yourself out for nothing).

When did the show first air?  The first broadcast was on BBC1 on Feb.11, 1996.

Record number of viewers: 14.9 million during for the 5th episode of series 1 (3/10/96) "The Power and the Gory,"

Real name of the church used in BallyK: St. Mary and St. Patrick'schurch

Location for the filming of BallyK:  exterior filming is done in the village of Avoca in County Wicklow, Ireland.  The exteriors of Hendleys, the church, the school, Fitzgerald's, Father Clifford's house, and the garda house are shot at Avoca.

Name of Quigley's Chinese restaurant:  Peking Ducks R Us, appeared in only 2 episodes.

Tony Doyle's (Brian Quigley) daughter Susannah Doyle starred along with Stephen Tompkinson in Drop the Dead Donkey, a popular British sitcom from 1990-1998.

At present there have been 5 seasons of Ballykissangel filmed in aired in the UK. The 5th season is slated for U.S. broadcast in the late spring or summer of 2000. The BBC plans to continue with a 6th season of Ballykissangel slated to begin filming in May 2000.
