Summary:
In the palm-shaded oasis
of West Hollywood, we meet Dennis, a promising photographer. As he prepares
to celebrate his twenty-eighth birthday, he laments, ' I can't decide if
my friends are the best or worse thing that ever happened to me.' The gang
includes Benji, the punkish innocent with a penchant for gym bodies; Howie,
the psychology grad student who thinks too much and lives too little; Cole,
the charismatic actor who accidentally keeps stealing everybody's guy;
Patrick, the cynical quipster, and Taylor, resident drama queen, who, until
recently, prided himself on his long-term relationship. Providing sage
advice and steady work is Jack, the beloved patriarch whose restaurant
is a haven for them all. When tragedy strikes the group, the friendships
are put to the test.

Showbiz says:
Though one reader has already
trashed the in-the-works gay movie I mentioned on Tuesday, 8 x 10, I still
feel its charming screenplay could result in something more than the usual
run-of-the-mill fare. In addition to Go guy Timothy Olyphant in the lead,
8 x 10 stars former TV Superman Dean Cain in a gay part that will certainly
seem a big departure to his television fans. Cain plays Cole, described
by another character as "one of the 8 x 10 club, those pretty boys with
harmless smiles who date people for sex and then break up because they
feel trapped and don't want to lose their options." Well, if anything can
convince Cain's followers that he's not Clark Kent, this should do it.
John Mahoney, who I like on Frasier but loved in Moonstruck, plays Jack,
an aging gay man who is given to quoting Shakespeare; while I previously
noted that this seems awfully close to the character William Richert played
in My Own Private Idaho, if anyone can find the differences, it's a pro
like Mahoney. Also in the cast: Andrew Keegan (10 Things I Hate About You),
Matt McGrath (The Impostors), Billy Porter (Shake, Rattle and Roll), and
Ben Weber (Casanova Falling), among others. 8 x 10 is being made by Sony
and sounds to me like just the kind of movie deserving of the special care
their new division, Screen Gems, specializes in. Before any other readers
sound off on 8 x 10, let me just say I didn't claim it sounded like high
art — I merely said I'm looking forward to it.
Dean was given a short interview on Access Hollywood on December 31st. He talked about the film "The Broken Hearts League." TBHL is the story of a group of gay friends, and yes. . . Dean is one of them. . . he even takes part in a guy-to-guy kiss!
