Alex Dimitriades

This is one of the actors that have been in Heartbreak High from the beginning. Alex was born on December 28th 1973 in Sydney, his favourite sports are rugby and soccer and his hobby is travelling.

Alex went to an all boys school with uniforms and strict teachers, but he liked it there.

He started playing Nick Polides, in the movie The Heartbreak Kid, which the Heartbreak High television series is based on. After the producers decided there was more in it than just a movie and started producing the television series, Alex got the same role he played in the movie, only Nick's surname was changed to Poulos.

Alex also appeared in the movie The Blonde Man in 1994. He was the first real star of Heartbreak High, and very popular, but unfortunately his character Nick died in the last episode of series 1. This was because Alex wanted too much money for his role and although producers Ben Gannon and Michael Jenkins both desperately wanted him to stay, the television station wouldn't allow it and he got sacked. Because the Heartbreak High spectators never actually saw Nick die, rumours of his return always went the rounds on the Internet. Once he had left the show Alex was critically acclaimed for his playing Warren Lanfranchi in miniseries Blue Murder in 1995, and he also appeared in Neighbours, as Steve George, and in G.P., both in 1996, and in stage production Wogboys, before appearing in yet another Gannon production: he played Charlie Coustos in cop drama Wildside, in 1998. Moreover, Alex plays main person Ari in the 1998 film Head On, where he uses hard drugs and has rough sex with other men. Taking on the part of Ari wasn't easy for Alex. After he read the book the movie is based on, Loaded by Melbourne based writer Christos Tsiolkas, he was impressed but also totally freaked out. The movie's sex scenes were the most daunting for Alex: he was left feeling almost ill about the whole thing; he found it very scary and felt very lonely. Also, he was worried about seeming too convincing, though he never kissed a man before.

Making the film proved so draining that Alex deliberated giving up acting after the shooting finished in 1998, but fortunately he didn't! The reviews reported: "his performance is sensational"; "we've seen some great performances from Australian actors before, but how many of them been this good"; "he has a great future as an actor ahead of him and this film is a milestone which will bring him to the attention of the international market". Now Alex laughs at the suggestion that he even thought of quitting acting! He got a script from Fox in America, and probably more coming: it definately seems like audiences all around the world will hear a lot more from Alex…

On Sunday March 21st, 1999 Alex appeared at Sydney's Walk Against Want at the Sydney Domain, where he and many others followed either a 7.5 or 15 kilometre route for charity.
