Tarnished Armor
Part 14

The emergency room.

Dr. Mason is consulting in hushed tones with Dr. Joe. Liza sits by Adam’s bedside, leaning in towards him, studying his face.

Dr. Mason: Mrs. Chandler?

Liza looks up.

Dr. Mason: Would you step outside with me, please?

Liza: Is he going to be okay?

Dr. Mason: Well, I don’t know everything, but I think we should discuss this outside, in the hallway -- or my office, if you prefer.

Liza: Okay.

Dr. Mason holds the door open for Liza, and she rises and goes to the door. After another look at Adam, Liza goes out into the hallway, and Dr. Mason follows.

Once the door closes behind them, Liza looks around briefly.

Liza: Dr. Mason, if it’s okay with you, could we discuss this here? I don’t want to be too far from him and my daughter's doctors will be looking for me here.

Dr. Mason: Of course. We’ve done a preliminary diagnosis, and we’ve determined a bit about the case, but not everything.

Liza: Okay. What does that mean for Adam?

Dr. Mason: His heart has remained strong and steady throughout this. He suffered from minimal blood loss, which is also good. Despite his history of hypertension, I see no signs of that right now. His blood pressure is fine and, as I understand it, has been fine since the ambulance first arrived.

Liza: Well, that’s all good news, right?

Dr. Mason: Yes, yes, it is. But he’s still unconscious, and I won’t know more about why until I’ve performed a cat scan.

Liza closes her eyes briefly, and then opens them again. When she does, her eyes are tinged with fear.

Liza: Are you saying he could be suffering from brain damage?

Dr. Mason: I don’t want to assume anything right now. He could be unconscious for a number of reasons. But it’s important that we perform the cat scan as soon as possible, so that we can get the best diagnosis possible and work from there.

Liza’s eyes well up a little.

Liza: Anything, anything you need to do.

A man walks into the admitting room, and goes over to the nurse at the desk.

Dr. Mason: I appreciate your cooperation. We’ll take him up in a few minutes.

The man walks over to Dr. Mason and Liza.

Man: Dr. Mason. Mrs. Chandler?

Liza: Yes.

Man: I’m Daniel Jensen.

Liza: Oh, Dr. Jensen, thank you for coming.

Dr. Jensen: Of course.

Dr. Mason: Mr. Chandler is inside now, Dan, but we’re going to be taking him up for a cat scan momentarily. I’d like you to come inside for a moment so I can bring you up to speed.

Dr. Jensen: Of course.

Dr. Mason: Mrs. Chandler, would you wait here for a moment?

Liza is about to protest, but then gives in.

Liza: Yes. Yes, of course.

Liza watches as Dr. Mason and Dr. Jensen enter Adam’s room.

Stuart and Marian rush into the admitting room.

Stuart: Liza!

Liza: Stuart. Mother. I’m glad you’re here.

Marian: Well, of course we’re here, darling. Where else would we be?

Stuart: How's Colby? How’s Adam? Is he okay? Can I see him?

Liza: Colby's in pediatrics. The doctors are in with Adam now, Stuart. He’s still unconscious, but so far, things look good. They need to perform a cat scan to know more.

Dr. Jensen comes out from Adam’s room. He stares at Stuart for a moment, and then remembers himself and goes to Liza.

Liza: Dr. Jensen, this is Adam’s brother, Stuart.

Dr. Jensen: Hello, Stuart. I’m sorry we’re not meeting under better circumstances, but we’re making sure that your brother is receiving the best care possible.

Stuart: Thank you.

Dr. Jensen: Liza, we’ll be taking him up in just a few more minutes.

Stuart: Liza?

Liza: Yes, Stuart.

Stuart: Can I -- would it be okay if I sat with Adam while he waits? I need to talk to my brother.

Liza: Dr. Jensen? Please?

Dr. Jensen: Of course. I’ll go see about preparing the cat scan.

Dr. Jensen makes his way towards the elevators.

Stuart goes to the door, looks back once at Liza and Marian, and then goes inside.

Marian: Liza?

Liza turns to Marian.

Liza: Yes, Mother?

Marian: How are you?

Liza: I’m...I just need...

Liza becomes completely undone.

Marian: Oh, Liza.

Marian draws Liza into a hug.

Liza sobs in Marian’s arms.
