Tarnished Armor
Part 30

The boathouse.

Adam walks up the steps and takes a seat on the bench.

He closes his eyes for a moment and runs his hands through his hair.

Then he gets up again and leaves.

       ******

Tad and Dixie’s house.

Dixie and Jake sit on the couch, startled by Junior's outburst.

Junior stares at Jake.

Dixie: Junior, don’t you speak that way to your uncle.

Junior: He’s not my uncle! I hate him!

Jake: Hey there, sport --

Junior: I hate you!

Dixie: Junior, I think you misunderstood Uncle Jake. Let’s go upstairs, and you can get in bed, and I’ll explain.

Junior glares at Jake, and then makes his way up the stairs. Dixie looks sternly at Jake, and then follows Junior.

Jake slumps back on the couch.

       ******

Liza’s car.

Liza is still driving down the streets of Pine Valley, looking around.

       ******

A vacant lot surrounded by a fence.

Adam slowly walks up to the fence, and leans up against it.

He closes his eyes and sees the inside of Holidays in his mind.

Then he has a quick glimmer of a memory.

Liza in Adam’s memory: We sat through two sets -- two sets -- and then we danced the entire night at the Drums of Brazil.

Adam opens his eyes and shakes his head.

He closes his eyes again. In another glimmer of memory, he sees himself move toward Liza as the walls of Holidays begin to collapse.

Adam’s eyes open quickly.

       ******

Tad and Dixie’s house. Junior and Jaime’s room.

Jaime is asleep in his bed. Junior’s bed is neatly made up.

Junior puts an envelope on his pillow that says “Mom.”

He picks up his knapsack, and zips it shut.

Jaime awakens and looks over.

Jaime: AJ?

Junior: Ssh!

Jaime: What are you doing?

Junior: Quiet! I need you to be quiet, okay?

Jaime nods.

Junior: I’m going out. I’ll be back.

Jaime: Where are you going?

Junior: I’m going to look for my dad. If anyone asks, just tell them I’m fine, and I’m looking for my dad. And don’t say anything ‘til I have enough time to get a head start.

Jaime: But --

Junior: Hey. Spit brothers.

Junior spits on his hand and holds it towards Jaime.

Jaime hesitates and then spits on his hand and shakes Junior’s hand.

Jaime: Spit brothers.

Junior goes to the bedroom door. He opens it, slides out, and closes the door quietly from the outside.

The house is dark. Junior makes his way down the stairs.

       ******

The vacant lot.

Adam paces back and forth. Then he starts patting his jacket pockets. He finds his cellphone and takes it out. He punches in a number. After a moment, someone picks up on the other end.

Adam: Liza? It’s Adam. Liza, could you come get me? ... I’m at Holidays. I mean, what used to be Holidays ... No, I’ll be here.

Adam hangs up the phone and leans back against the fence.
