The vacant lot.
Adam is leaning against the fence.
Liza pulls up in her car. She shuts off the ignition and jumps out.
Adam raises himself off the fence.
Liza goes to him. She hesitates for a moment, and then hugs him. Adam doesn’t respond.
Liza pulls away.
Adam makes his way to a bench a little way down the street. He sits on the bench.
After a moment, Liza follows him and sits down on the bench too.
Adam stares ahead, and Liza watches him.
Adam (slowly): We sat through two sets, and danced at the Drums of Brazil.
Liza: Ah. The Drums of Brazil. That was a great night.
Adam: Two sets of what?
Liza: Cabaret. You don’t remember?
Adam: I remembered you saying something about it.
Liza: Oh.
Adam: Holidays. Collapsed. I remembered a little of it.
He looks at Liza.
Adam: You were there.
Liza: Yes, I was.
Adam: Two years. Two whole years. And no one told me.
Liza: I’m sorry, Adam. But you have to admit that you didn’t let me anywhere near you for a while. And then things kept getting so mixed up. But you’re right. I should have told you.
Adam reaches into his inside pocket. He removes his wallet and takes out the photo of Colby that Liza left on his bedside table. He looks at the photo, and then at Liza.
Adam: Two years. And she’s three months old.
Liza: This is our second child, Adam.
Adam: Where is she? Our first child?
Liza looks away for a moment, and then looks back at Adam.
Liza: She’s gone, Adam.
Adam: Gone?
Liza: She died.

The boathouse.
Junior rides up to the boathouse on his bicycle.
In a simultaneous motion, he jumps off the bike and drops it to the ground.
Junior: Dad! Dad? Are you here?
There’s only the sound of water lapping.
Junior takes a look around. He doesn’t find anyone.
He goes back to his bike, picks it up, and gets on.
Junior rides off.

The bench near the vacant lot.
Adam takes another photo out of his wallet. It’s a picture from Adam and Liza’s second wedding.
Adam: This looks like a wedding photo.
Liza: It is. Our second wedding.
Adam: Second wedding.
Adam looks at Liza.
Adam: I’m tired.
Liza: We should probably get you back to the hospital.
Adam: No.
Liza: Adam?
Adam: I’m not going back there.
Liza: Adam, I don’t want to argue with you --
Adam: Good, then don’t. Take me home.
Liza is quiet. And then she answers.
Liza: All right. I’ll take you home.

Chandler Mansion.
It’s dark and quiet.
The front door opens. Junior appears wearing his knapsack. He takes his key out of the front door, and closes the door behind him.
Junior is all scruffed up, and has obviously been through a lot of wear and tear in his search.
Junior: Liza? .... Dad?
The house remains quiet.
Junior goes to the living room. He sees a picture of Adam and Liza on the desk. He picks the picture up and stares at Adam. Then he puts the picture back down.
He goes over to the staircase, and goes upstairs.
The front door opens again.
Liza and Adam enter.
Liza: We can talk more in the morning.
Adam: Liza?
Liza: Yeah?
Adam: Can I see her? Can I see the baby?
Liza: I would love to go see the baby. Let’s go upstairs.

Colby’s nursery
Colby is sleeping in her crib. Marian is asleep in a rocking chair.
Liza and Adam enter the room.
Adam goes to the crib.
Liza goes over to Marian and nudges her.
Liza: Mother?
Marian wakes.
Marian: Oh. Liza.
Marian notices Adam.
Marian: Adam? Shouldn’t you be in the hospital?
Liza: We’re fine, Mother. Are you very tired? Can I give you a ride home?
Marian: No, darling. I can drive.
Liza: Okay. I’ll call you tomorrow.
Marian gets up and kisses Liza.
Marian: Goodnight, Adam.
Marian leaves.
Liza goes and joins Adam at the crib.
Adam (whispers): She’s amazing.
Liza (whispers): I think today was the longest I’ve ever been away from her. I missed her.
Adam (whispers): You know, I think she does look like me. Stuart said she did, but she really does.
Liza (whispers): Stuart told me that too. He said he had a picture of you two from when you were younger, but I never got a chance to see it.
Adam (whispers): Liza?
Liza (whispers): Yeah?
Adam (whispers): What’s her name?
Liza (whispers): Colby.
Adam (whispers): Colby? Why’d you name her that?
Liza (whispers): Actually, Adam, you named her that.
Liza laughs.
Adam looks up.
Liza (whispers): What?
Adam (whispers): Don’t lie to me. I can find out very easily when you’re lying to me.
Liza (whispers): Oh, Adam, I haven’t lied to you.
Adam (whispers sarcastically): Right. I’m going to bed. Alone.
Liza (whispers): Don’t worry. I wouldn’t dream of violating your honor.
Adam shoots her a dirty look, and leaves the room.
Liza (whispers): Oh, Colbs, wait ‘til he finds out your middle name.
Liza leans down and kisses Colby, and leaves the room.
