Tarnished Armor
Part 34

The boathouse.

Adam stares at Liza.

Adam: Oh, Liza, I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.

Liza quickly joins him on the bench.

Liza: Adam, no. No! You were in no way responsible for our accident.

Adam: Our baby --

Liza: Adam, you would never put our child in any danger. You must know that.

Adam: But the police report --

Liza: Was about the other driver.

Adam looks at her, searching her face.

Liza: I swear it, Adam. I swear it. I know how hard this is for you. I know how confusing it is. But I need you to trust me when I say that you were in no way to blame for any of this. Do you believe me?

Adam: I don’t know.

Liza: Adam, I promise you. It’s the truth.

Adam is quiet for a moment.

Adam: So I didn’t...

Liza: No, you didn’t. You did everything you could to protect us. In fact, if it wasn’t for you, I might not be alive.

Adam looks at Liza quizzically.

Liza: Adam, a few minutes before the accident, I took my seatbelt off to take care of Colby. You were the one who insisted that I put it back on. Now I’m not sure whether I would have put it back on myself. I don’t think we’ll ever know. But I do know that you made sure that I was safe.

Adam: I’m glad.

Liza: Are you okay?

Adam: I think so.

Liza: Good. Then, we should probably get back to the house before Junior tears it down.

Liza touches his cheek, and then gets up and turns to go. As she begins to walk away from Adam, Adam has another glimmer of a memory at the boathouse.

Liza (in the memory): I don't want to look over my shoulder ever single day and try to see if you're doing something illegal or unethical.

Adam (in the memory): You know that Corview -- that whole thing was an anomaly.

The memory fades and Adam calls out to Liza.

Adam: Liza!

Liza turns back around.

Liza: Yes?

Adam: What do you know about Corview?

Liza slowly comes back into the boathouse.

Liza: Corview?

Adam: Yes.

Liza: I know you made a few bad business decisions. That’s all. Why?

Adam: I just remembered something.

Liza: What?

Adam: I remembered the two of us talking here. We were talking about Corview. You said that you didn’t want to worry about me doing anything illegal or unethical. Those are strange words coming from you. What did you mean?

Liza comes and sits back down.

Liza: Adam, I’m going to tell you something very painful. And I need you to listen to everything I have to say, because what happened was full of misunderstandings and hurt on both sides.

Adam: Go on.

Liza: I had gone for a check-up at the doctor's office. For my first pregnancy.

Adam: Our first child.

Liza: Yes. There was a little boy in the room. And I later learned that he had been suffering from something known as Fifth Disease. It’s something that’s not major for small children, but causes stillbirth. And the little boy transmitted Fifth Disease to me. Right there, in the doctor’s office.

Adam: So our child died.

Liza takes his hand.

After a minute, Adam removes his hand.

Adam: Corview.

Liza: Okay. I didn’t lose our child at first. And we didn’t know anything was wrong. And we had reconciled. Well, actually, that’s not true. We truly got together for the first time, actually. And then my mother decided to take me shopping. In New York. And I boarded a plane. A TransGlobal plane. The place malfunctioned and we had to return. It was a shaky landing. I went into premature labor. And that’s when the stillbirth happened. We didn’t know about Fifth Disease. We only knew about the accident.

Adam: So you thought...that I was...

Liza: Well, not at first. You kept it from me. You kept the whole knowledge of your ownership of Corview from me. And then I found out. And I thought that...well, it doesn’t matter what I thought. I couldn’t forgive you at the time.

Adam sits in silence.

Liza: I’m sorry if this is too much. Dr. Tolan told me not to overwhelm you --

Adam: I don’t give a hang about Dr. Tolan. Liza, I know that things must have changed for us. I understand that. We’re obviously together in some way. But it doesn’t add up for me. I think about what I know to be true, and what I’m experiencing, and they don’t match up. I don’t know. I don’t know what the truth is. I would think that our feelings for each other must be strong if we conceived a second child together. But I just don’t know.

Liza doesn’t say anything.

Adam: So I guess I’m going to just have to keep working through all of this.

Adam gets up.

Adam: And now I think we’d better be getting back to the house.

Liza: I guess we should.

Liza looks at her watch.

Liza: Oh.

Adam: What is it?

Liza: I was due at the studio hours ago. But I don’t want to leave Colby today.

Liza is quiet, and then looks at Adam.

Liza: I know it’s a lot, but do you think you could stay with Colby today? There’s a nurse that stops by, and Winifred can always help out, but I think it’s important for her to have one of us there after being away from us for so long.

Liza watches Adam, and then quickly offers him an out.

Liza: If you can’t, I’ll just --

Adam: I can do it. Liza?

Liza: Hmmm?

Adam: Thank you for trusting me with our child.

Liza: Always.

Adam turns and goes from the boathouse.

Liza stays for just a moment longer.

And then she leaves.
