NEW MOVIE ROLE!
Anthony LaPaglia, who left his Tony-winning starring role in "A View From the Bridge" to star with Sean Penn and Uma Thurman in Woody Allen's next film, has now joined the cast of Spike Lee's "The Summer of Sam."

He'll play a police detective, starring with Adrien Brody, Mira Sorvino and John Leguizamo.

He's also taken the co-starring role alongside Richard Dreyfuss in the John McNaughton-directed HBO biopic about mob figure Meyer Lansky, "Lansky," and will star opposite Greta Scacchi this winter in the Australian film "Looking for Alibrandi."

CAREN BROWNING:
As Eddie's wife, Beatrice, who watches in mournful, knowing frustration the destruction of her family, Caren Browning is subtly affecting, much as was Allison Janney.

Sharp flashes of bitter fire explode from her Beatrice, a woman visibly weary with disappointment. (Indeed one almost wishes Miller had made Beatrice the focus of the play's sympathies and attention; hers is a nobler and sadder predicament.)

Anthony's Interview at Playbill!

ANTHONY ON "A VIEW":
"I've been in plays that audiences have really responded to in a big way -- The Rose
Tattoo and On the Open Road -- but, not to this extent," said Anthony LaPaglia, star of
the acclaimed revival of Arthur Miller's A View From the Bridge, which collected four
Tony noms, including one for LaPaglia himself. The role was a challenge, said the actor. "I
had to figure out a way to gauge the progression of the character. There is a tendency in
this role where you play the second act in the first act, so that the play has the same
volume or tone all the way through it. To me, it's a slow build, so in the events of the
second act, you know what's coming but you don't know the ferocity. Working that
build-up is the hardest thing." It all adds up to an emotionally wrenching experience every
evening. Asked is he did anything to wind down afterwards, LaPaglia replied, "After I
finish spilling my guts on stage every night, I am relaxed."

"To me, one of the best things you can do in Sydney is just get on a ferry and go through the harbor. You can catch ferries everywhere and it's the cheapest and most fun way to see Sydney.
Geographically, the city is just beautiful."

 "Repair Shop" TV Series closer!
HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Feature film director Phillip Noyce (Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games) is close to a deal to direct the CBS pilot "Repair Shop," starring Anthony LaPaglia (Murder One, Bulletproof Heart).

The drama is about a former member of a covert government agency who turns the table on his pursuers and former colleagues.

Separately, ABC has bought a drama pilot called The Game, on which former basketball star Earvin (Magic) Johnson will serve as an executive producer. The pilot is described as "L.A. Law" set in a Philadelphia sports agency.

(In "A View From The Bridge") "Anthony LaPaglia proved how enormously appealing he can be in The Rose Tattoo a few seasons back, and he is appealing here once again, albeit against type; his is as compassionately-realized an Eddie Carbone, I imagine, as anyone could render."

interview!
"I discovered network television is not the medium for me...They don't want actors to participate, and I participate. I'm not gonna be a lump of meat that spouts out lines. It's about economics, not quality... This is a bad time to be an actor...I make a great living at it, but in terms of fulfillment, there's no soul in it anymore. The supermodels, they're now actors. I refuse to accept them in my club. The networks don't care about quality. Talent is not at the top of their list. I swear, if Al Pacino or Robert De Niro were trying to get a career right now, they'd have a hard time." --http://www.totaltv.com

Anne Rice comments on "Bulletproof Heart"!

Phone Message Transcript: September 29, 1997

(appearing on Anne's fan phone line, (504) 522-8634)

"Hi, this is Anne Rice. Let's see, it's morning, no, no, no, yeah, it's 12:30 okay, on September 29th, and I just saw this beautiful movie on Showtime. I'm going to go out and find the disc of it and the DVD and a tape. It's quite, quite incredible. It was BULLETPROOF HEART and it had Anthony LaPaglia and Mimi Rogers. Mimi Rogers is as wonderful as she was in SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME years ago, or in THE RAPTURE just a few years back. She's an absolutely fantastic actress and woman, and the whole movie had the, God, the star quality of an allegory and yet it's just pulsing with life. The colors of it even were beautiful. They're sort of a ruby red and gold all the way through and then a black and white when it went to the city lights of New York. It's just beautiful. It's definitely what they used to call film noir in the old days, which just means dark film, a film shot at night, a film about the dark aspects of life. I highly recommend it. Anthony LaPaglia, Mimi Rogers, and I think the director's name is Mark Malone. I'm going to find out for sure, but again, this is like a jewel. It's one of those movies that's about everything. Naturally, it was shot in Canada. It seems like over and over again really top quality things are in Canada.

Oh, and I have to mention that Peter Boyle was in it. Peter Boyle was one of the leads in it. Last year I was on POLITICALLY INCORRECT and it was a lot of fun. I was on, I guess, a total of three times. But anyway, the first time, Peter Boyle was there, and I was just star struck. I mean, I don't know, you probably, some of you may not recognize his name if you're very young, but he's an absolutely fantastic actor. And for those of you who are movie buffs, he was great in YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, he played the monster in Mel Brooks' movie. But he is a great actor. A towering kind of actor, he towers over everybody. Anyway, I recommend that film.

Take care and good night. Leave me a message at the beep. One minute is all there is, but I will listen to it. I love you. Take care. "
