Day 8: Seward, Kenai & Baseball Game

  • Jacob next to glacier We left Anchorage at 7:00 a.m. and drove south on highway1towards the Kenai Peninsula. At Exit Glacier and we stopped and walked up to the end of the glacier. It was blue water rather than the gray that you often see up here. There were chunks of ice that was also floating down the river. We continued south to Seward and went into several stores where I bought a light weight hooded coat for $60. This was a nice small town with a great view overlooking the water at the mountains. There was also a large ferry boat that was docked in the harbor when we were there.

Ferry in Seward We came back north and then drove thru

  • Soldotna which was a fairly large town for Alaska and reminded us of small cities back home in Washington. It must of been the Fred Meyer store that reminded us of Kent, Wa. We drove right thru town and went to Kenai. There was a nice visiter center in Kenai that had an model exibits of oil rigs, native american artifacts, ponka made of animal intestines and early settler belongings. There was also a Russian Church in town that has been here since the early 1900’s.

We went to a baseball game that night which had the Peninsula Oilers against the Mat/Su Miners. This ia a league for college players to play in during the summer, it’s not much money, but it is a place to go and practice. The coaches are usually from universities and it's good for everybody involved. Jacob retrieved a couple foul balls during the game and there was an older guy who worked with the organization who would pay kids 50 cents to give the ball back. This team obviously was not in it for the profit. Some ex-pros who have played for this team includ John Olerud, Frank Viola and Otis Nixon. This was good for all of us as it was a releaxing night and a break from the driving and playing tourist.

That night we took the road north to Captain Cook Recreation Area and camped for the night.

  • Sunset @ Captain Cook Area Our campsight was next to a trail that went down to the beach We watched the sunset around 11:00 p.m. while Jacob built rock towers. The first few yards to the water was rocky but then after that it was mud flats. The weather was nice most of the day with some cloud overcast but a warm day. I drove only 300 miles today and 3850 so far in eight days.
