Welcome to Mauritius!
The home of my penpal Cat!
(That Maurice bit above is "Mauritius, paradise island" or something similar in French)

Introduction: Everyone, this is Cat.
Cat, this is, uh, everyone.
Mauritius is a small island located in the Indian ocean, it is approx 40km by 60 km at it's widest and longest and only 2,045 square km.
In the 1960's it had the fastest growing population in the world, the country was poor, there was massive unemployment, lack of medical supplies etc. It was expected that the population would rise from 500,000 to 3 million by the turn of the century. Thanks to family planning "classes", the birth rate was halved (from 6 children per woman, down to 3.) The population is now approx 1 080 000 million With the help of foreign money, other crops were planted amongst the sugar cane, and the tourist industry was set up; therefore the standard of living is getting higher.
Mauritius' currency is the rupee. There are 51% Hindu, 28% Catholic, 16% Sunni Islam, with Protestant and probably Buddist minorities. The official languages are English and Creole, although French is more or less an unofficial language as it is spoken more than English. I will try to organise a pic of the flag, but the colours represent as follows: Red=Independence, Blue=the Sea, Yellow=the Sun, and Green=Nature.

(This information came from the World Book, an episode of Quantum, the Guinness Encyclopedia, Mauritian Affairs and Tours- Melbourne, and my penpal Cat.)

Scanned these off a postcard Cat sent, and altered them. If you think that's illegal, and dreadful, say so, and I'll take them off.
