Letter from the Principal, Mr. Ian J. Kerr
Dear Friends,
Today was my first visit to this website and I wish to thank, and send my congratulations to, Go Yoshida, Douglas Sumner and Gwyn Chadwick for making it happen. I do receive occasional letters and visits from ex-Uplanders who ask me to help them get in touch with former school-mates and, while we are more than willing, it is not always possible for the School to help.
It seems to me that the opportunity to put Uplanders in contact
electronically is wonderful and the renewed interest in the development of the School will give a tremendous boost to what the present staff and students are trying to do. I do hope that you will maintain your interest as Uplands passes different milestones. Of course, many of us do not like to see our favoured institutions change but if we are realistic, the School
must evolve and adapt if it is to survive. We must try to ensure that what ever the changes, Uplands will retain the friendly atmosphere and the reputation for high quality education that many of you have commented on in your communications.
Two nights ago, I attended our very first Graduation Dinner organised by our Year 12 students at the Golden Sands Hotel in Batu Ferringhi. (We have had "Leavers' Dinners" in the past but this is the first time ever that we have had Sixth Formers from our new Year 13 leaving Uplands to go to University. These pioneers have done very well and been offered prestigious college places including one for Cambridge University.) The event was an excellent one with good food, light-hearted home-produced entertainment and a marvellous atmosphere. I was able to publicise your new website and I hope that all leavers from now on will register and stay in touch.
Good luck and best wishes to all, those I know and those whom I hope to meet one day.
Ian J. Kerr
