Coral
is a nature habitat for a rich variety of sea animals, so if we destroy
it, we destroy our own food resources as well. The process of destruction
is already extended to a level that makes it most important to start protective
measures.
Corals
are first tiny boneless animals (moluscae) which float freely in the sea.
Once settled on stone or other old coral they start to produce chalk skeletons
and grow extremely slowly to what we later appreciate as a coral reef with
its abundance of colors and live forms. Ideal live conditions for coral
to grow would be crystal clear, clean water, a temperature of 18-32 degree
Celsius and good light conditions. One function of a coral reef is to clean
the water but it can do so only to a certain level and if the sea is more
polluted than this level the coral in trying to clean the water will poison
itself and die.
For
us here on Koh Samui coral is an opportunity to run businesses that can
employ many people. It attracts tourists in general and makes dive schools
and diving equipment stores flourish. If we do not take care to keep the
surrounding water clean, we will lose our natural wealth and most of the
reasons why tourists like to come here. So it is not only our duty to ourselves
but sensible thing to keep our source of income. There are many ways to
destroy the fragile live of a coral reef and thus many things to avoid,
like: constructions in the sea, wrong methods of fishing and so on.
To
help us to preserve the coral,
1.
Don't buy souvenirs made from coral.
2.
Do not throw rubbish into the sea.
3.
Do not touch or break off coral while diving or snorkeling.
4.
Help us inform others to take care of coral.
5.
Park your boats at the proper anchor places.
6.
Help us to develop anchor places for boats, so they don't driff into coral.
To
take care of the environment is everybody's duty, so we like all of you
to join in and help us to protect the beautiful nature of Koh Samui on
land and under water.
