The Magnificent Seven
The Magnificent Seven
In the heart of Port of Spain lies the Savannah. Home to the Botanical Gardens and to the Horse Races, the Savannah is a haven for small vendors, such as the Oyster Man, the Coconut Man, and the Hamburger Man (who incidentally is still open at 5:00am for an after-party snack).

The Savannah is graced on one side by the Magnificent Seven, a row of seven stately buildings. Shown above is one of the houses in this row, called Mille Fleurs (Thank you Niki for the info). I'm guessing by the name that the house has some french background but don't ask me what, cause I eh that smart.

Did You Know? You can judge how old a car is in Trinidad by looking at its license plate? Find out more.
The Archbishop's House
The Archbishop's House
Also among the Magnificent Seven is the Archbishop's House, shown above. The current Archbishop, Anthony Pantin, is a well-known figure in Trinidad, as much for his role in the Catholic Church as for his family.

To the right of the Archbishop's House lies the White Hall, the residence of the Prime Minister. Also in the Magnificent Seven is Stollmeyer's Castle and the Queen's Royal College, which was attended by Trinidad's first Prime Minister, Sir Eric Williams.

Apartments in Maraval
An Apartment Building
The Real Estate market in Trinidad differs considerably from that of North America. Firstly, the rental market is significantly more active than the buying and selling market as the economy makes it somewhat more difficult to own a home. Many people will spend their whole lives renting.

The types of housing available is also different. Unlike many larger cities where high rises and apartments are popular, the majority of the market in Trinidad consists of single family homes and townhouses. Apartment buildings, such as the one shown above, are available, though many are part of the rental market.

Also of interest is the wrought iron burglar-proofing. Home break ins are so frequent that it is normal to see this kind of burglar-proofing on homes.
