The
"Coquí"
This
tiny colorful frog can only be found in Puerto Rico, its graceful melody
is our natural bedtime lullaby, and is dearly missed by us, puertorricans
in exile..."¡Ko-kee!..." "¡Ko-kee!..."
In almost all the towns and countryside of the Island we find the species
"Eleuthrodactylus coqui" that has a slower chant, while the other
specie "Eleuthrodactylus Portoricensis" is found in the mountains
and sings faster with a higher tone.
The unique chant of the Coquí serves two purposes. The syllable
"co" (ko) is for calling the female and the syllable "quí" (kee)
is for warning the other nearby males.
The puertorrican coqui is specifically different from any other
form of coqui in the West Indies. Efforts to stablish the species outside the island have
not been successful since it does not survive when moved out of Puerto Rico.
