The Simpsons were first created by Matt Groening during his years in elementry school. Matt Groening first established himself as a cartoonist by drawing a comic strip for a few local newspapers, featuring a race of white creatures that looked much like the Simpsons with socks covering their bodies and none of the trade mark features (ie spiky hair) Books of these early cartoons are sold in bookstores. The Simpsons First appeared on the Tracy Ullman Show as minute long cartoons, showing before and after commercials. The animation and voices of the characters were extremely crappy in comparison with more current Simpsons episodes. After a contract was made with 20th century Fox, the Simpsons debuted on a tuesday night at 8:00pm. I think the first episode was the babysitter bandit. If so ,the animation was brought up a notch but still looked relatively crappy. The show was an immediate success. In the beginning, Bart was the most popular character and on many of the Simpsons merchandise, Bart was the focal point and the rest of the family was crowded behind him. Many of the earlier episodes featured bart as well, such as the Daredevil Bart episode, and the Bart failing 4th grade episode, the miniature golf championship and many others. Bart was even the lead singer and star of a Simpsons music video entitled "Trouble". He also introduced a Michael Jackson video wearing a cockeyed bowler hat and white rhinestone glove. But after a series of episodes featuring Bart and Homer together such as the Lost in the woods episode and christmas special, Homer became an even more popular character. Newer episodes featured Homer, such as the Homer skipping church. Although their has been a recent decline in ratings for the Simpsons it still remains very popular and has many imitators such as "The Critic" (although the critic has broken away into an excellent show.) My opinion is that the Simpsons is truly the greatest show on television.
