2) The 7 HokurikudohKanji-Hokurikudoh ] or the seven domains of Northern Land Region; also Hokurokudoh
3) The 15 ToukaidohKanji-Toukaidoh ] or the fifteen domains of Eastern Sea Region.
4)The 5 KinaiKanji-Kinai ] or the five domains around Kyoto.
5) The 8 San'indohKanji-San'indoh ] or the eight domains of Northern Mountain Region.

7) The 8 SanyohdohKanji-Sanyohdoh ] or the eight domains of Southern Mountain Region.
8) The 11 SaikaidohKanji-Saikaidoh ] or the eleven domains of Western Sea Region.

Each region contains several Kuni or domains. The regions and domains administration had been established since Nara period, according to Taika Reform in 645. Fifty-eight Kuni and 3 island domains were established. Later, in 824 the administrative system was reorganized to comprise 66 Kuni and 2 island domains, excluding Hokkaidoh and Okinawa island. The division survived until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. The provinces were abolished in 1871. They were relocated and renamed; and the domains became prefectures.

Hokkaidoh was not included in the 8 regions because it was said the land of barbarians, called "Ezo" [ Kanji-Ezo ]. People living in Ezo were called "Emishi" or "Ebisu" that appeared in some ancient books, but, there is no evidence that those people were the Aynu.

For those who want to compare the ancient domains with prefectures in present time, I suggest you to see current map at city.net - Japan . Sorry for inconvenience..
