Let's get right into it.  If your campaign(adventure) is mostly inside and low, you wouldn't want to be 7 feet tall.  A lot of your character decisions need to depend on what type of DM you have.  You need to find out this information beforehand.  You may ask your DM this.

Also your character depends on what type of campaign you are playing.

This next one is extremely important.  I have found this problem with most beginners.  AD&D is about surviving and fighting monsters.  You have to kill and battle people. Most beginners seem to be all riled up and they want to kill anything in sight.  This is VERY bad.  About 15% of characters you make can do this.  They are very rare.  Almost all of the time you will get in bad situations and get killed.  This is obviously not wise and a good DM will kill you because his job is to keep the campaign realistic.

Also, when things sren't going your way do not quit on things.  It may be frustrating but thats the way the game is.  AD&D is not an wasy game but it is fun.  If you are not having good luck doing or finding something, do not quit.  Usually the DM has put it there for a good reason.

Try to get things that suit your character well.  If you are a mage, why would you stock up on heavy weapons.  If you are a warrior, a good idea is to stock up on weapons.  If you are a mage, get spells that suit the campaign.
