For the moment, I really don’t have a whole lot to say in my journal, except maybe talk about the fact that not only do I have Environmental Ethics, but I have a global studies course that focuses on ecology. This wouldn’t be so bad except for the fact that the global studies course is aimed at people who haven’t had any science beyond bio 100.
Well, that wasn’t enough for an assigned journal. I guess I could start writing up a brief outline of my thoughts on how the environment should be treated. I suppose I should start with the fact that I am not the kind of person who does demonstrations for the environment. Nor do I worry overly about it. I am not in favor of the Libertarian view of "let whoever do whatever they want," but neither am I in favor of massive governmental environmental controls. I think that the EPA and OSHA do a fine job as is. Now I would like to see the world economies shift away from their current focus on disposable goods and cheap dirty mass production, but that doesn’t mean that I want to see an end to plastics and disposable goods. It seems to me that our energy needs can be served without our current environmentally harmful methods. This means that I’d rather see fewer or no hydroelectric and fossil fuel plants. I would like to see a switch over to nuclear power and orbital solar collectors, accompanied by more money put into researching fusion energy as a safer alternative to fission. With the nearly limitless power afforded by orbital power stations, we could shift our industries and transportation solely to electric. More next time
