Betrayal at Krondor---the game
Betrayal at Krondor (BaK) is based on the famous 'Riftwar Saga' fantasy series created by the great fantasy writer Raymond E. Feist. You begin the adventure with three characters---spellcaster Owyn, Moredhel warrior Gorath, and Krondor noble Locklear. The goal in the first chapter is to bring Gorath to Krondor. In the succeeding chapters you will have control over other characters in the game---magician Patrus and former thief James. As you go along with the story, mysteries and side quests will unfold, some of which you need to solve in order to get to the next chapters.

To get through every chapter, you need to be well prepared. You must have enough food and you must keep your weapons and armor in top shape. When you come across and kill your enemies, check out the armor and weapons that they're carrying and change yours for the better ones. To have the best and have enough items for the adventure you must have money. To acquire wealth, sell the items that you will find on your enemies. Most BaK gamers spend a lot of time trying to acquire more than enough money and they don't mind going back and forth from the dead enemies to the nearest shop. As you encounter and fight more enemies, you build up on your characters' statistics. Therefore, it is most often wise to not avoid a fight because as you gain experience, you will have an easier time in defeating your enemies in the succeeding chapters. You can also increase your characters' abilities by paying people you meet to teach you combat or spell-casting techniques. You can also 'acquire' knowledge by reading books found in the game. There are a lot of items that will help you and your characters through the game. There are armor and weapon enhancements, potions, herbs, and other stuff that will help you defeat certain types of enemies.

Ts you get the feel of the game, you will discover a lot of things about it including how to counteract certain poisons, the best shops, where to find the cheapest food and lodging, the best spells and the best weapon enhancements against specific enemies. You must also pay particular attention to the conversations with characters that you meet in the game like priests and priestesses in temples. They will give you insights that are often valuable.

The combat is turn-based and you must use your best strategy on how to handle things. Don't forget to position your characters properly to give you the advantage of space. Also take note who your enemies are. Some take more damage by a specific item or spell.

The game has nine chapters that cover a lot of places in Midkemia. The adventure will take you to mines, tunnels, various towns, across rivers and mountains, freezing weather, forests and other places. There are numerous side quests that will keep you busy throughout the game. Word locks on chests will tease your brains and other locks will test your skills. Be careful, however, some chests are booby-trapped with explosives that might either leave your characters in near-death or worse, end the game and bring you to the start of the chapter you're in. My advice, save your game before opening locked chests or use the spell Scent of Sarig to check if they're trapped.

So, if you feel like you can take on this adventure, download a copy now and start playing. If you finished the game years ago like I did, play it again or check out the sequel Return to Krondor. Betrayal at Krondor is the best CRPG ever created. I'm sure a lot of people will agree.
