Campaign History:
259 years ago, a woman on a distant
planet from Earth discovered a powerful object, an obelisk that granted
power to the person who found it. Even without the obelisk the woman
had been special among her people. Towering at just over 8 feet tall,
she possessed incredible physical strength and her body could be transformed
into a bronze like metal at her will. She also seemed to stop aging
when she reached about her 28th year. The obelisk linked with her
life force and gave her additional powers. Nobody seems to know the
entire extent of her abilities, but she has demonstrated in the past incredible
regenerative abilities, including the ability to seemingly come back from
the dead.
With her personal abilities
came political power on the planet. Her charm, beauty, and charisma
were nearly equal to her physical abilities, enabling her to appeal to
her people, and lead them effectively. She quickly rose to the position
of planetary governor, but didn't stop there. Realizing that her
planet was becoming overpopulated, she devoted incredible amounts of resources
to developing faster than light travel. Her efforts paid off in a
relatively short amount of time, and the first starship was constructed.
With control of her planet
solidified and the ability to reach other places, the woman began to spread
her influence to neighboring systems. After conquering and consolidating
the surrounding systems, she named herself empress of the star systems
and has since then been known only as the Empress, and her empire is known
as the Imperial Legion of the Stars.
As her empire expanded and
more worlds fell under her control, the Empress became aware of two other
space faring races. The first encountered was a sadistic cybernetic
race known as the Morgoths, who have a sizable empire of their own and
are led by a cybernetic dragon known as Vargh. The other race, a
much more minor race militarily, is an avian race known as the Trianii.
Little is known of the Trianii, except that their ships are only barely
a match for modern Imperial warships.
With the discovery of the
Morgoths and their tactics of genocide when they discover an inhabited
planet, the Empress stepped up her conquest of the galaxy. Most of
the planets of the galaxy that have sentient life have no way of defending
themselves from the Morgoth invasions, so the Empress is seeking to gain
as much territory as she can possibly protect. She was on such a
mission when she happened across Earth.
It started out as a diplomatic
trip to a known inhabited world. The Empress, aboard her personal
corvette and deep in hypersleep, happened to pass by a hidden Morgoth outpost.
Recognizing the ship, and realizing the potential of ridding themselves
of the Empress by sending her into a star, the Morgoths quickly boarded
the Empress' ship and killed the rest of the crew. Knowing of her
combat abilities and seeming invulnerability, the Morgoths chose to leave
her in hypersleep while they reprogrammed the ship's computer for a direct
course with the star in the Sol system. Having completed their task,
and with the Empress the only being left alive on the ship, the Morgoths
returned to their outpost, leaving the doomed corvette to its demise.
It was the asteroid belt
near Saturn that saved the ship. Passing near one of the larger asteroids,
the ship's course was diverted, and the computer had been damaged enough
in the boarding attack that it wasn't aware of the course change.
The ship hurled toward Earth and eventually got caught in Earth's gravity
well. It plummeted through the atmosphere and made a most ungraceful
landing in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, not far from Denver, CO.
The campaign's heroes, being in Denver at the time chasing one of their
enemies, saw the ship crash land. They found the Empress and woke
her from hypersleep, and thus begins the campaign.
Campaign Notes:
This campaign started out as a
GURPS Supers campaign set in the IST world. After a couple of sessions,
I found that the GURPS system just wasn't working out for the type of campaign
I wanted to run, so we switched to the Hero System (Champions) and combined
the two worlds. What resulted is an Earth with a somewhat dense population
of metahumans compared to "normals." Dr. Destroyer is still the master
villain of the Earth, and continues to scheme, but his aim has gone slightly
higher than world domination now that he is aware of the Empress' presence.
The International Super Teams (From GURPS IST) work alongside PRIMUS from
Champions, and are two different branches of United Nations forces.
CLOWN runs rampant through the campaign, and is not about to let something
as small as being integrated into a galactic empire ruin their fun (Merry
Andrew has begun an extensive campaign, with Beauford the Bard as his campaign
manager, to be elected the next galactic emperor... the Empress doesn't
find this at all amusing). Nearly all of the superheroes and supervillains
from GURPS Supers, GURPS IST, GURPS Mixed Doubles, Champions, Classic Organizations,
and Classic Enemies exist in the campaign, but for the most part they take
a back seat to what's going on on the galactic scale, with a few notable
exceptions listed above.
The Empress has integrated
the Earth into her empire, and has set up her palace on the outskirts of
Paris. She runs a matriarchal government, with females in charge,
and the males serving as soldiers or as servants to the females.
The Empire has grown to the point where the Empress cannot manage every
aspect of it herself, so she has chosen a number of warlords (all female
metahumans) to manage the various regions of the Empire. She lets
her warlords run their sections of the Empire and will only interfere if
things are going particularly badly in a region, or if a region requires
her special attention for one reason or another. Currently she is
staying on Earth, though that may change in the near future as she continues
to expand her borders. There is a full fleet of starships in orbit
of Earth for defense while battle stations and a shipyard are constructed.
The Empress plans to use Earth as a staging point for a major expansion
to try to contain the Morgoth growth.
This region of space currently
falls under the jurisdiction of the Empress' right hand, the Enchantress.
She gets her name from her abilites to influence people (especially men)
with her incredible beauty and her ability to drain people's willpower.
She is also an accomplished mentalist, with powers like mental illusions
and telepathy. Though she possesses a fairly bubbly personality,
she is a very capable leader and tactician. She manages the day to
day affairs of the integration of Earth into the Empire while the Empress
concentrates on their more long-term goals.
