The Champions Universe
Champions
is a Role-Playing Game (RPG) published by Hero
Games in which players take on the persona of
a comic book superhero. I am currently running a campaign entitled
"The Imperial Legion of Stars" with some friends
over the Internet, which has been going off and on since about July of
'98. I was also involved in another campaign several years ago that
lasted about three years and had several players come and go, but the core
of the team was made up of five of us, known as the Angel City Vindicators:
-
Freedom Girl: Unofficial leader of the
team. Combination brick and blaster, able to lift approximately 100
tons as well as fire lightning bolts from her hands.
-
Cyberpunk: Unofficial second in command
of the team. Martial artist, but only in the broadest sense of the
term, actually more of a dirty street fighter. Favorite weapon is
a tow chain. Has an artificially intelligent motorcycle as sidekick
(appropriately named BIKE). 'Punk brings to the group something that
everyone else dreads... the attention of Dr. Destroyer, the main villain
of the Champions Earth. It all started with a flaming coconut drink
with a little paper umbrella burning in it...
-
One-Eyed Jack: Played by myself, Jack
serves as backup firepower for the team with an array of telekinetic powers,
including telekinetic blast and entangle. Pairs well with Freedom
Girl in group combat tactics. Jack also enjoys gambling and owns
a casino.
-
Mindlink: The mentalist of the group.
Powers include ego blast and telepathy. She is also in a rock band
-
Journeyman: True martial artist.
Uses a bo staff as his primary weapon, but is also skilled at hand to hand
fighting. He also has a talent for finding weak points on an enemy,
increasing the effectiveness of his attacks.
Other
notable group members included Sonic (who later acquired the nicknames
'Tinfoil Titan' and 'Aluminum Avenger' after the villain Ripper threw a
steam shovel on top of him and his powered armor suit wasn't quite as tough
as it looked. He spent the next several months in the hospital).
Centurion was another member, he had a magical sword and roman-style armor.
He fell prey to a movethrough attack by Freedom Girl after saying the wrong
thing at a particularly bad time and left the group a short time later.
Savant, the mad scientist, was another notable member. He specialized
in nanotechnology, and had a vehicle that was made up mainly of nanites.
It quickly became known as the snot-blob, much to Savant's chagrin.
At one point, the Angel City Vindicators were thirteen members strong,
but the core group were the only five that were in the entire campaign.
The
main villains of the campaign were VIPER, a criminal organization bent
on world domination, The Femme Fatales, a group of super powered villainesses,
lead by Freedom Girl's "Backworld" counterpart, Lady Bondage.
A number of independent supervillains were also thrown into the fray (usually
hired by VIPER as extra muscle) including Ripper and Gargoyle, and on occasion,
Mechanon or Dr. Destroyer would make an appearance.
The
Campaign ended with the defeat and imprisonment of Dr. Destroyer.
By that point, VIPER was still around, but had been seriously crippled
(and plans were underway to make the crash site of VIPER's sky carrier
into an amusement park called VIPER World). Gargoyle had accidently
been killed in a fight, and Ripper had gotten himself a lifetime sentence
in Stronghold's ultra-security orbital prison facility. Lady Bondage
and her group (less one member) are still at large.
