Boxing

While it may not look like a great game graphics-wise, this game is still a lot of fun. The sole screen in the game is a top-down view from above a boxing ring. Even though they looks like two crabs, these two objects represent the two boxers-well, their two boxing gloves and heads. If you put this limitation aside, you may be able to enjoy Boxing.

Moving the joystick around controls your boxer, and pressing the fire button throws a punch. Basically, you must try to line up you glove with the opponent's head and quickly press the fire button to jab and get a punch in. Depending on the punch, you will score one or two points. If you can score 100 points before the two minutes in the game are up, then you will knock your opponent out. If you can't find someone to box with, you can choose to fight against the computer. The 2600 computer is a worthy opponent, but I have beat him many times.

Boxing was programmed by Bob Whitehead. He also programmed two other sports games for the 2600-Home Run and Football-while he had previously worked for Atari.

The folks at Digital Press are not too fond of this game: In the price guide, 4th edition, they note: "this game could have also been titled Two DNA Samples Flexing, and packaged as surreal video art. Not much of a game, I'm afraid." I believe it's a matter of personal opinion. I must defend Boxing-it's not the greatest but there is certainly much worse out there for the 2600. Try SSSnake or Bugs (both by Data Age).
