What is Anime?
Are you REALLY... THAT curious?
I mean, come on, there are some REEEAAAALLLLL weirdos out there that will mess up your perception of Anime. Some people say that it's all about big, hot, sexy
babes that run around while the guys beat the crud out of each other in giant mecha.
And I keep telling them, ANIME IS NOT CONNECTED TO THE POWER RANGERS OR BAYWATCH!!!
Okay, really want to know about Anime? Okay, but be ready for a lecture.
Ranma 1/2 - A story about a young martial artist (Ranma) and his father, his enemies, his numerous fiancees (most... all of
which are his father's fault as it's Japanese custom for arranged marriages), and a cursed spring. The spring curses Ranma to be a girl
every time he's splashed with cold water and revert to a guy when splashed with hot water. He tends to attract guys as a
girl and girls as a guy. Odd that one guy gets so dang lucky. This often gets the attention of the more philosophical people
on the web, who ponder what they would do in a similiar situation. Also attracts a lot of perverts.
Sailor Moon - A story about a girl and her friends... who also have magical powers to fight crime and triumph over evil.
Attracts: people who like magic, people who like mini-skirts, people who are psychologists and total perverts.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Oooooh. This is a big one. If you don't have anything against Angels being referred to as bad
guys, then this is a good series. Psychology, Philosophy, and such should watch this series. REALLY good for ideas.
Warning: This is an angsty, violent sort series, when you get deeper into the story, so beware. Attracts: Mecha-fans, Philosophers, etc.
Revolutionary Girl Utena - Not as big as the other series in the list, but that doesn't mean it's not good. This is a good series
watch if you've just finished Neon Genesis Evangelion.
This is a world where a young girl who had just lost her parents is found by a prince. The prince helps the girl back
on to her feet and gives her a ring to remember him by.
Unfortunately, she was SO impressed by him that she wanted to become a prince herself. She's not a crossdresser, rather she merely wears a boy's uniform to school.
It may seem that this series starts to grow dark, but it's a good story. As the story progress, we learn more about everyone involved.
Attracts: Romanatics, Otaku, people who like magic.
Tenchi Muyo! - This series has two versions. There's the OVA series and the TV series. What's the difference? The TV's longer
and the characters all have different relationships to each other. For the most part, anyway. The poor hapless high school student, Tenchi Masaki, is caught in a love triangle
between a space pirate and a princess from a distant galaxy.
What's worse is that he has a pervert for a father, a strange grandfather, a cat/rabbit creature, a little girl and
at least one member of a interplanetary police force running around.
Attracts: UFO lovers, Otaku and people who enjoy watching others suffer.
El Hazard - %This is the story...% %of a man named Makoto...% %who had three very lovely girl chasing him...%
Sorry. Like Tenchi Muyo!, there are two timelines. The TV and the OVA.
The OVA is much shorter because they had to cram a lot of story into a small amount of tapes.
The TV makes more sense, but is still weird. This is a more light-hearted story, but as most anime go,
it gets dark too. But this series always has a happy ending.
The TV also has different plots, altered characters and a completely different ending.
Slayers - A light-hearted spoof of RPGs and fantasy worlds, Slayers is the most ridiculous story ever. Meet Lina Inverse,
the sorceress who can spook dragons and her companions, Gourry Gabriev, Amelia Wil Tesla Sailoon and Zelgadis.
This is the best series I've found in a long time. DON'T miss it if you like anime.
