The Rei page, dedicated to Rei Ayanami as she was in Neon Genesis Evangelion... told with a REISPACE twist of course. |
What is Evangelion? Here's the description for EVA from 1997's "The Complete Anime Guide" by Trish Ledoux and Doug Ranney. This book is a Reispace Favourite... go get one; "Credited with helping revive the current anime industry, EVANGELION is the first smash-hit anime TV show since SAILOR MOON in the early 90's, and marked the return of Studio Gainax to anime after a four year hiatus. EVANGELION begins with the oldest premise in the giant-robot book; a son called to pilot the robot his father built-but quickly shows its real interest to be the dysfunctional relationships between it's three different generations of main characters. |

These work for NERV, a secret, super-technological organization
based in the artificial city of Tokyo-3 in the year 2015, whose research onto artificial
evolution and resistance against the invading, ultra-powerful entities known as the Angels
are somehow connected. With a background motif of Kabbalistic mysticism and hidden
conspiracy, EVANGELION offers an X-Files-like investigatory feel as well as
fantastic scenes of combat between the Angels and the "Eva" biomechanical robots
of NERV. Becoming more and more emotionally intense in later episodes, the clever
and intricate design work, otaku in-jokes and bouncy "fan service" expected from
Gainax are in EVANGELION interleaved with bizarre, brutal, surrealistic and shocking
scenes which caused much controversy and even calls for a boycott against the show.
Public outrage over the ambigious, mocking conclusion of the series-combined with the
factor of EVANGELION's vast popularity-led to the announcement from Gainax that a double
feature EVA "movie" would be released in the spring of 1997. The first
film will be a feature length edit of the first 24 episodes, the second, an all-new
version of the final two which will provide, according to (director Hideaki) Anno,
"the same ending, but from a different perspective." The two movies will
be released together under the title EVANGELION: "Death" and
EVANGELION:"Rebirth". Released in Japan under the title "Shin Seiki
(New Century) Evangelion" by King Record; available in North America through A.D.
Vision. (26 episodes)
