Steph's French Horn Autobiography

I started out on horn in the fifth grade and soon began taking private lessons. In seventh and eighth grades, I received I ratings at my district's Solo and Ensemble Festival. I also began playing in the St. Louis Symphony Community Music School's Young People's Concert Orchestra. I played 2nd part in seventh grade and 1st part in eighth grade. In high school, things really started to pick up. I got my own horn--a Holton Merker-Matic--which helped my sound a lot. In ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade, I played in the Music School's Young People's Symphonic Orchestra, and served as principal during tenth and eleventh grades. In tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades, I participated in the St. Louis Youth Symphony Orchestra and had a blast! I also played in the St. Louis All-Suburban Band for all four years, playing 1st for 2 of the 4 years. In addition, I auditioned into the Missouri All-State Band all four years, placing 2nd my junior year.

Last summer I had a great experience when I got to go to the National Youth Orchestra Festival at Interlochen Arts Camp with the Youth Symphony. It was great! One of the highlights of my time there was meeting Eric Ruske himself! I'm now currently playing in the Truman State University Symphony and planning to keep up my playing while pursuing a degree in psychology.
