This page is intended as a help to public and private organizations to deal with Y2K issues, and ensure safe passage beyond the fateful date.
The IT side may be tackled relatively easily. However, the embedded systems pose a great challenge, as there are thousands of biomedical equipment that need to be inventoried, and then checked for possible malfunction when roll-over and other tests are performed. This site will provide information in two areas. First, useful links are listed, and then the statuses of the equipment are detailed.
List of equipment that will be affected by Y2K issues. This includes 37 models and 225 pieces of equipment. It will be kept being updated as more information comes to light. (21/10/1999).

MANAGING
YEAR 2000 BUSINESS AND LEGAL RISKS FOR HOSPITALS AND HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS
by Steven H. Goldberg. {The Year 2000 (or "Y2K") computer problem --
that is, the inability of most computers to process date information later
than December 31, 1999 -- is much more than just a computer problem. In
the case of hospitals and health care systems, Y2K problems originating
from both internal and external sources are likely to threaten
the whole institution, not just those departments that are concerned directly
with information technology. Unrectified, Year 2000 failures could
compromise patient care, disrupt core business functions and create substantial
liability exposure. To effectively address the problem, boards of directors,
chief executives and other senior officers and managers must sponsor and
actively support comprehensive risk management strategies across all business
units... Health care facilities will be exposed to operational disruptions
caused by failures in computer systems, embedded chips, business dependencies,
and public infrastructure... Embedded chips are non-programmable
microcircuits that are "hard wired" into other pieces of equipment that
may be critical to patient services or hospital operations, many of which
include date calculations in their programming logic. The equipment in
which the chips are embedded often is not under the control of the information
technology department but usually is the responsibility of the vendors
who supply and maintain them for diverse operational units of the hospital.}

The following list details the status of the medical equipment. The information herein is only intended as a guide. This page contains details on 49 models. To continue browsing, please click on next at end of table.
To make a convenient visual identification of the status of the equipment, the following colour coding is used for the number entries:
1. Blue indicates that the equipment is Y2K
compliant and that no further action is required.
2. Brown indicates that either some piece of
information is missing (unclear model number, name of manufacturer is muddled),
that the manufacturer needs be contacted, or that the software version,
or other aspect of the equipment, needs to be checked by the Ministry.
In short, some information must be fed back to the writer
of these pages.
3. Red indicates that the equipment is not
Y2K compliant. This includes functional non-compliance, in which
case a replacement, upgrade or intervention must be made
to ensure safe operation. Also, the cases of functional non-effect, but
where timing and/or dating are adversely affected, are also included in
this category. In other words, this last category includes equipment that
will keep functioning safely after 31/12/1999, but whose timing/dating
functions are compromised (i.e. give rubbish output).
Please note that it is best to refer to the actual site of the
manufacturer for the latest updates on the status of equipment.

The Operating Room Data Manager (ORDM) which is commonly attached to a Narkomed Anesthesia machine and utilized with off-line software is not Year 2000 compliant.
