The
Corio Hotel at Goolwa was named after the Paddlesteamer Corio which
sank on the Murray River in 1857 in the year that
the Hotel was built. It has continued to service its manypatrons with the
produce of South Australia's breweries, wineries and excellent foods. A
feature of the Hotel are The Great Yankee Doodle Tobacco ceiling
posters, which are reproductions of a painting called The Spirit of
76 by Archibald M Willard. The original painting titled Yankee Doodle
was a humorous depiction of the fourth of July celebrations, but was changed
from humorous to patriotic for the Centennial Exposition of 1876 in Philadelphia
USA. Coloured reproductions such as those on the ceiling of the Corio were
sold prior to the centennial under their new title.
Rob and Sarah Hill have owned the Hotel since 1993 and the
service is friendly, dependable. A meal at the Corio Ala Carte dinning
room is a relaxed affair with a great menu to choose from. The dinning
room can seat up to 90 diners.. The hotel has 15 poker machines, a Lottery
Agency, Sky Channel television and for those takeaway drinks, a well stocked
Drive Thru Bottle Department.
Meet Rob and Sarah and their friendly staff seven days a week.
