The Ngarrindjeri Nation inhabited the lower Murray region and this area was one of the major centres of Australian aboriginal civilisation. Goolwa and Kumarangk (meaning woman) was the most important meeting place for the Ngarrindjeri people. This was the most densely populated region of aboriginal Australia, with the people not needing to move far because of the rich sources of food supply throughout the area. This is where Australia's major river, the Murray, meets the sea and for the Ngarrindjeri Nation  has deep spiritual significance.

Hindmarsh Island (Kumarangk)
Linked from Goolwa by a free, sedate, 24 hour car-ferry, which accepts pedestrians and cyclists. Both the island and Coorong have a worldwide reputation for their unique bird watching opportunities.

Soon there may be a bridge built from Goolwa to the island. This has caused considerable controversy for many years. The building of this bridge is claimed will desecrate Aboriginal spiritual sites, also there have been many evironmental and cost complaints. See some history of the proposed bridge.

NB.  The bridge recently got Government  (Dec 1999) approval and work began. It subsequently was  suspended, pending further appeals.

Since 1933 the Ngarrindjeri people have been involved in a protracted struggle to defend their spiritual beliefs and to maintain their responsibilites to care for their land and the waters. The impact of the proposed Hindmarsh Bridge is yet to be properly considered. The campaign to stop the bridge has received international, national and local interest, concern and support. Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people continue to work together to protect the sacred ruwl (land) of Hindmarsh Island and the Cooorong in the true spirit of reconciliation.

The importance of Hindmarsh Island for me is spiritual. As a child, I grew up at Goolwaand lived in Victor Harbor. Although I was never told the story, I beleived it. It gave me answers to unsaid things about the Island. My great grandmother is buried on the Island near the wetlands. I feel sad about what is happening and I feel sad about people claiming to know every thing about the place without living there. My family consists of the Sumner and Rigney family.

Hindmarsh Island is, and always was, a place of spiritual, cultural and heritage importance to the Ngarrindjeri people and in particular, women. It is part of the Seven Sisters and therefore is a place of importance for all Aboriginal women. I have seen and continue to see the pain, suffering and struggle of the Ngarrindjeri women in the fight to protect Kumarangk and it breaks my heart. But no matter what they throw at them, the spirit and belief of the people are strong and will remain strong.
