After commencing her on a I.V drip with a small amount of Oxytocin, my vet told me that she wasn't contracting (proceeding with labour). So I consented for her to have a caesarian. I watched throughout the entire caesarian proceedure (last time I was the 'vet nurse' and hubby was the anaesthetist- as it was 23:00hours when 'Peppers' emergency caesarian and consequential desexing was done)....I watched as he cut 'Squirrel' open, pulled out her uterus (Y- shaped) and pulled out a kitten from one side. The kitten started to breathe, but it was deformed. This kitten had a Anencephala (not sure of the spelling!), which means that although it had a brain and eyes etc..it had no meninges (brain bones/skull) hence the brain and eye was exposed. The kitten died very soon after birth. To me it looked like something from Terminator or Night of the Living Dead. Thankfully I have a strong stomach, otherwise I'm sure I would have lost my stomach contents all over the surgery floor. The next kitten (from the other side of the uterus) was a large, perfectly formed stillborn kitten. It probably died because of the delayed labour.
He stitched 'Squirrel' up, but he assured me that her uterus was in good condition for future kittens and that the problems she had with deformed kittens, wasn't genetic. He said that her diet was to blame, yet we have been feeding her the same thing (most expensive food on the market) for ages..For legal reasons he wouldn't commit himself, but he said that he had seen this before in a breeding Queen (an 'entire' female cat used for breeding) on the same food ( I am going to research into this Food company thouroughly). I might even go into the PET CHAT room and see whether anyone else has been having these problems with their breeding Queens.
Jovially, I said to my vet, "At least she can get her teeth cleaned properly whilst she's under the GA (General Anaesthetic)". He just looked at me. Another problem which we need to look out for is periodontal disease, as her gums were bleeding as he scraped the tartar off her teeth. Overall I was not impressed with what was happening with my cat. I am going to make sure that things change. I started off by buying a different (high quality) pet food, and I will see if I can wean her of the other one (she won't touch anything else, but I have to try).
Go back to the main page now....for the ending....
