Christi and Mel's Wedding

Welcome to Christi and Mel's Wedding Page!

About Us

Mel and I have been living together for five years. I'm a full-time secretary for Lansing Community College, and Mel works full-time for Michigan State University on their golf course. We both love animals and have 6 dogs and 4 cats. I'm going to school and just received my Executive Secretary degree last spring. Now I'm taking classes in the construction program. We got married on October 18, 1997. Our wedding had a 1930's theme to it, so things were sometimes more complicated. This page contains information leading up to the wedding. The Wedding Ceremony

Mel's Catholic and I'm Congregational. We're getting married in my church in the town I grew up in. The 1930's theme was Mel's idea. Our colors are silver and deep red. We are using a unity candle, which I'm making, and I'll get a picture posted as soon as I finish it. The ceremony is written and I'm now working on the programs.

We have a rather small wedding party. I have one maid of honor, one bridesmaid, and one jr. bridesmaid (all of which are my sisters). Mel has two best men and two ushers.

The Invitations This is the picture that's on the front of our invitations. We'll be incorporating this into our table centerpieces. Our invitations were mailed August 23 and the responses are due back September 20. This should give us plenty of time for those procrastinators. Update: As of September 18, 23 responses received out of 66.

The Clothing

I've picked out a pattern (from 1931) for my dress, and the girls will be wearing a pattern from 1930. They'll have pale silver/grey dresses and the guys will be wearing tuxes similar to the ones from 1930.

My Dress This is the picture that my dress is based on. I found a pattern from 1931 that has that same bodice, and will just need the skirt lengthened. I'm not having a train and instead am going with the long veil.

My Veil I will be wearing a lace cap similar to this one.

My Bridesmaid Dress This is the dress I've chosen for my bridesmaids. As I said, it's from a pattern from 1930. The Butterick Archives happened to have a picture that shows the back of the dress, which has been very helpful to my seamstress. I must take a minute to tell you how wonderful my seamstress, Ann, is. Because there is no pattern for the bridesmaid dresses, she's just having to make it up as she goes along. I can't wait to see the finished product! :0)

The Tuxes This is the picture that we based our tuxes on. Tuxes haven't changed too much, and we were able to find ones pretty close to this for only $90.

The Flowers

We're using fire and ice roses (white with red tips on the petals) for the bouquets. Mine will also have calla lillies in it with ivy. The guys will have deep red roses, except for Mel who will have a white rose.

The Pictures

Our photographer is going to print all our photos in black and white. We also found a guy who owns a 1927 Model-T. He's going to bring it out to the church so we can use it for our pictures (for free!).

We found disposable cameras that are black-and-white for only $4.95 each. However, the minimum order is $100. That's fine for me because I need 20 cameras anyway. For more information, check out their web site. UPDATE: The cameras had to be cut from the budget, but I thought you guys would still like the info on them.

The Music

For the ceremony, the girls will be walking down to Cannon and I'll be coming down to the Trumpet Voluntary. All our music is on CD.

For the reception we will have nothing but Big Band music played. However, we did choose Harry Connick Jr's version of "It Had to be You" for our song. I know it's not in keeping with the time, but we love that version.

The Reception

The reception is being held at the local country club. We're trying to keep the guest list below 120 (we have to pay for this ourselves). We're having a formal sit-down dinner (with a choice of Chicken Wellington or Marinated London Broil) with dancing to follow. The invitations say "Adult Dinner and Dance" so we'll see if any rude people decide to bring their children.

For the centerpieces, we found wooden candlesticks at Jo Ann Fabrics for $1.99 each. We're spray painting these with a chrome color. For the candles, we're using tall, white tapers and gluing the picture from our response cards (a close up of the faces of the guy and gal off our invitation) halfway down the candle. Then we're taking 1 1/2 feet of white tulle with silver stars on it and draping it around the base of the candlestick. I'll get a picture on as soon as possible.

For favors, I'm either going to make chocolate-covered cherries or cream chocolates (of various flavors) and wrap them in clear wrap tied with silver and red ribbon.

The Honeymoon

Mel and I will be driving from Michigan down to Florida for our honeymoon. On the way down, we're going to stop off in Tennessee and spend a few days in a log cabin. Then it's off to Disney World. I can't wait! We're going to be there for the big Halloween celebration (Halloween is our favorite holiday). It's going to be a riot. :0)

Some of my favorite wedding links:

iBride - A terrific resource with different discussion groups. The monthly discussion groups are great. I'm a member of the September/October group and I can't tell you how great it is to have 15-20 people supporting you and going through the same thing you're going through. I don't know what I would have done without those girls.

The Knot - Tons of information!
