Following the completion of her 1983 headling tour, Laura got
right to work on her third albumn *SELF CONTROL.* Released in April 1984, the LP scanned powerful rockers and moving ballads alike. *SELF CONTROL* was highlighted by the title track, which not only hit the top five, but spawned a highly controversial video directed by Billy Friedkin. Certified RIAA gold in August, the LP also featured *THE LUCKY ONE,* which garnered Laura the Grand Prize at the prestigious 13th Tokyo Music Festival.
As before, Laura followed the release of *SELF CONTROL* with an extensive series of major concert appearances.
Despite her heavy recording and touring schedule,
Laura has also managed to actively pursue her other creative
love, acting. In 1983, she made a highly regarded guest star
appearance in a dramtic role on the "CHIPS" television series.
This was followed by the filming of her first major
motion picture - "Mugsy's Girls," co-starring Laura and
Ruth Gordon. And in the fall of 1985, she will journey
to Australia for the filming of "Backstage," from the makers
of the highly-acclaimed "Breaker Morant." Laura also appeared on German television in An American Girl In Berlin (1981).
But for Laura Branigan, music assuredly remains her
primary focus. This is clearly in evidence in the summer
of '85, with the release of her most mature and enticing
work to date, *HOLD ME.* As with her past three albumns, it
was expertly produced by Jack White (with two tracks
co-produced by Harold Faltermeyer). Not surprisingly, Laura
tackles a remarkable range of material with equal skill,
energy, and grace. Highlights include the infectious title
track the captivating *THE NIGHT SPANISH EDDIE CASHED IT IN,*
The Powerful Anthem *I FOUND SOMEONE,* and a moving version
of Alphaville's *FOREVER YOUNG.* Laura Branigan is clearly
very much in control of a career that has only begun to blossom.
Few performers have ascended the ladder of pop success
with the speed, style and savvy of Laura Branigan. Raised
in upstate New York, upon her graduation from high school Laura
headed to Manhattan. She studied drama, and was later recruited
by singer Leonard Cohen to tour Europe as his backing vocalist.
Returning to NYC, Laura concentrated on building a solo repertoire.
Meanwhile, the proverbial "street buzz" began to build; and her
two-week solo performing debut at the famed Reno Sweeney's was
SRO all the way. Shortly afterwards, Laura was signed to Atlantic Records by Chairman Ahmet M. Ergegun.
In March of 1982. Atlantic released Laura's debut album,
simply entitled "Branigan." Produced by Jack White, it heralded the arrival of a very special artist. Showcasing her marvelous voice, it was an assured, powerful set, which encompassed a variety of moods. As the LP gained momentum, one song in particular began to emerge as the people's choice. It was called *Gloria* and it would become one of the more remarkable success stories in contemporary music.
I took my daughter very young at the time (age 6) to see Laura in concert for her "Touch" tour in 1988. I was telling this story as to my daughter wanting to get up on stage and sing with Laura. She did crawl up and made it on stage at the edge but, a bodyguard made her come down. Well Laura was very pleased but knew what was going on so Laura gave my daughter a hug and kiss.
My daughter gave Laura Roses and she received a hug & kiss from Laura on stage. A day I will always remember and cherish.
Thank you Laura.
