Then you have to start just before dark to get ready for them. Drag the Graham's out of the food box. The chocolate out of the ice chest and the bag of marshmallows OUT of your brother's hands! Find your pocket knife and head to the greenest looking area around, to cut and widdle at 'YOUR' marshmallow roasting stick.
Dragging a few pieces of old dead firewood back to camp is always a plus for you too. So....get the fire started! And if it is damp, and you are of the persuasion that 'white woman's fire' is needed, then you can have that going and kick back and widdle that stick. Green wood is easy to widdle to a fine shape at the end. Be sure the end is sturdy, but as small as possible. Keep the end of the stick a consistent size too, like a straw.
And now, the wait begins. I am not of the persuasion to have my marshmallows blacken and burnt. Many say they are, but it is because they are too impatient, or have never tasted the golden delectable roasted marshmallows that make the S'More a thing of pride and joy. Patience is the key here. Find the red coals, and sit back and WATCH your marshmallows. Two on a stick always seem to be the easiest way to get them just right. As they brown, they will begin to smoke just a tad. That is precisely the exact time to turn them. And watch them again. Turn them again once they just begin to smoke. And you will find the most delicious golden brown orbs, their centers all melted to a light and airy froth.
Then you get the grahams out, layer half a Hershy bar and set your marshmallows on top. Layer that with another graham cracker, and pull your marshmallows off the stick. Viola!
You have just made the finest delight there ever was camping....for a kid! *wink*
