Training Part Two

Please give this page time to load thank you

Welcome to my training page part two. On this page we will concentrate on starting this pup on what he was bred to do tree game.Where we left off we had taken a stroll to the woods to get Century used to his new world, now on to the nitty gritty of making him a top dog like the ones shown on this page.

.

Lady a Pelham Stock cur

Now Century is going on 5 months old time to get serious about things. At this age I introduce him to a raccoon in a rolling cage or a cage period. The reason for this is that coons can be mean little critters and we sure don't want our prize pup being hurt do we. We also don't want any harm done to this coon either. A cage gives him protection and protects the dog also. If Century gets a good trimming by this coon he could be ruined for life.So where is our money now? If you don't understand this look at it this way if a bully would beat us up would you go back for more . The answer might be yes but this is few and far between I would stay clear by choice, I hate pain .Same applies to this pup he might go back like a banshee or avoid it like the plague. Now you may ask , how often do I do this with this pup once or twice a week for Ten Minutes only, and not more as he will loose interest quickly and be bored. Now be sure to brag him up and pet the blazes out of him if he does well. But also Remember he might not show any interest at all so just let him be and tomorrow is another day.

I also like to use a coon skin and play tug a war with him for a little bit once in a awhile. By this I mean for short periods of time and not every day.Once or twice a week is enough. So now the basics is being installed in his brains hopefully for good.So now we move up a notch in his training.

Now back to the rolling cage if you have a started dog bring him along . Now Century is showing little interest yet so let him be for now. Grab the old dog and let him go he will bark at the caged coon remember now that the coon will not be hurt. So Century will get excited we hope by all the fuss and join in. Remember to BRAG him up if he does. After our ten minutes or so call it a day .

After a few times of this hopefully he will raise all dickens at the caged coon. So now what you ask? We will now tie a rope on the cage and pull it up a tree to start him treeing .I usaully tie it there and brag him up if he trees and keep petting as he does so. If no interest is showing out comes old trustful and we let him show him how it is done. REMEMBER NOT TOO LONG AT A TIME. So now he is treeing on a caged coon and is ready for the real test of his life. Night Hunting, get your boots on as here we go.

The first thing I like to do is let the old dogs start a track and going and let Century get excited listening to the race. After it is up and going strong I turn him in to the old dogs to join into the run. Hopefully he stays with the old dogs and goes to the tree with them. I try to get to the tree as soon possible and tie him to the tree and brag him up while he talks to old bandit up in the tops. I then lead the old dogs away to start another track leaving him at the first tree this lets him to know that when he trees he should honor his own tree and not leave to honor another dog. So after a few times of this it is time for old Century to earn his feed.

So now is the time to take old Century out on his own as all the basics we can do for now are done. The only thing left is giving him the time to mature into the dog we are all proud to feed and own. REMEMBER this he will make mistakes like we all dobut with age and time in the woods he will turn into the barnburner we all dream of. And maybe he will turn into a dog like I have shown here on this page or back to the drawing board so is the life of a houndsman or woman.
