It is believed that he and his wife Elizabeth ?--? were born in Ireland. He had received a Royal Land Grant in Craven County on 8 Dec. 1774. He died in late 1822 in Newberry , SC. He died 12 Sept 1856 and is buried in the Cleland Cemetery on Belfast Road, Newberry, SC. His first marriage was to Jane Plunkett, daughter of Robert and Margaret (Murdock) Plunkett. An entry in his diary reads: I, Elihu H. Cleland volunteered into the service of the Confederate States May 1, 1862;and I then left Mattie A. Cleland my Dear and loving Wife at her Fathers in Pickens District South Carolina on Friday morning May 16, 1862 and then proceeded to the camp being mustered into service on Monday 26th May 1862 at Adams Run Coleton District in South Carolina. He was married 28 Nov 1861 to Martha Ann (Mattie)Watt of Madison, SC. She was born 23 Jan 1844 and died 21 Sept 1910. They had the following children: +i. William Pinckney (W. P.) CLELAND ii. 4. William Pinckney (W. P.) CLELAND was born 16 Dec 1862 and died 6 Oct 1934. His first wife, Rufie Jones, was born 24 Nov 1863 and died 26 Aug 1905. They had six children. His second wife was Olive Christine BOLT (right). She was born 15 Jun 1881 and died 16 Nov 1970. She was a teacher. They had two children. W.P. Cleland and Rufie Jones had the following children: i. 5. Harry Henderson (Harry) CLELAND was born 7 Jun 1914 in Anderson, South Carolina. He died on 18 Oct 1979 in Atlanta, Georgia. Harry grew up in Anderson and Westminster, SC. He attended Appalachian State College for one year. He founded and owned Cleland Construction Company in Columbia, SC. Later he worked for Harbor Plywood Company and moved the family to Atlanta, Georgia in 1956 when transferred by the company. In Atlanta he worked in carpentry and also held sales positions, the last being with Shedd Brown,Inc. He met Allie when he was in the Columbia Hospital for an appendectomy. He was known to his grandchildren as Grandaddy. His death was due to cancer. He was cremated and his ashes were spread in the rose garden at Mt. Harmony Cemetery at the old Atlanta Crematory on the Bankhead Highway in Atlanta, Georgia.
He was married to Martha Allie (Allie) SUBER (daughter of John Samuel Jefferson, Jr. (Jeff) SUBER and Sara Elizabeth Johnson (Sadie) RABB) on 25 Aug 1940. Martha Allie SUBER was born on 26 Sep 1917 in Newberry County, South Carolina. She died on 7 Nov 1997 in Cumming, Gerogia. Allie grew up in Newberry Co., South Carolina. She attended nursing school at Columbia Hospital in Columbia, SC. There she met Harry when he was hospitalized for an appendectomy. She apparently almost choked him when he reached out to get her attention and touched her in a "ticklish" spot. She startled and accidentally dumped a can of powder she was holding onto his face. She continued to work in Columbia at the Providence Hospital and moved with the family to Atlanta in 1956. There she worked as a private duty nurse at Piedmont Hospital. She moved to Cumming, Forsyth Co., Georgia in 1983. She was known to her grandchildren as Granmama, Nanny, and Grandmother. She died of congestive heart failure. She was cremated and her ashes are yet to be spread. Harry Henderson CLELAND and Martha Allie SUBER had the following children: +i. Harry Henderson (Harry), Jr. CLELAND. +ii.
