Day 10:
Wednesday October 16th 1996 Manang to Yak Kharka. 4000 meters We are sorry to hear in the morning that Ramsey had been sick in the night. Very severe stomach pain. Beverly is going to have the doctor from the HRA look at him. Don't think they will be able to go on. Ramsey had done this trek twice before and wanted to do it with Beverly. If you get sick this is a good place to do it as there is a doctor. It was a steep climb from Manang, beautiful sunny day, fantastic scenery, trail is high above the river. After leaving Manang we leave the Marsyangdi behind and follow the Jhangeng Khola which joins with the Khangsar Khola to form the mighty Marsyangdi. Ram and Hari carried our day packs or I don't think we could have made it. They seem to be getting heavier as we gain elevation. Feeling OK but breathing hard when climbing, having to stop to get a deep breath. Pauline's face was swollen this morning, a sign of AMS, Decided to take the Diamox. I took a Diamox also hoping it will help me sleep. Everything is dry and dusty, scrub bushes on the hillsides, some wheat fields. the path is narrow and high in some places. You must watch where you put your feet, would not want to fall off this path in places. If I really want to look around I STOP walking and make sure where my feet are. We went behind an ancient mani wall as there was nothing higher in this area. The Diamox is a diuretic and makes you go a lot. This is good to prevent AMS.
I decided to go for a walk up the mountain to see the view better. It is also good to climb higher then you are going to sleep to prevent AMS. It is at these altitudes it starts to get critical . Went up one side of the mountain through the paths the yaks make . A lot of yaks are grazing on the hillside. It got too steep and because I was alone and I hadn't told anyone where I was going I decided to come down. In the village I met Ram, I think he was looking for me. I then climbed up another hillside where I could be seen and took some pictures. Lots of other people were doing the same thing. The locals brought the yaks into the village before dark. Everyone got out of their way as they came right down the main street. They can be quite aggressive I guess and it is better to beware. There is a group of campers in the village all set up with tables. The porters and the donkeys carry these heavy tables over the mountains. Went to bed early again with lots of clothes on. Need the rest. Did not bother to have a shower, too cold. The diamox is working as both Pauline and I had to get up in the night.
