Day 11: Thrusday October 17th 1996

Yak Kharka to Thorung Phedi. About 4420 meters

Another steep climb to Thorung Phedi. I carried my pack the first part of the day. Very hard. the allitude is starting to really affect breathing.

We cross a narrow path across a steep clif, high above the river. Keep eyes on the path. All the different visual affects inclined to make me dizzy.

A beautiful day. Crossed bridge and climbed again to Thorung Phedi. Crossed over a dangerous looking stone slide. Ram asked us to walk as fast as we could. Sometimes falling rocks and icy patches. Ram and Hari sure footed like mountain goats.

Thorung Phedi is a zoo. We check in at the checkpoint and get our permits stamped. checkpoint at Thorung Phedi
Pauline putting on her pink sweatshirt. Bed in dorm, unreal about 20 people. Put on all our clothes for to-morrow and will sleep in them. No idea how many people at this place. Some are getting pushy. Everyone trying to get something to eat.

In the afternoon Pauline and I and many other people climbed the first part of the steep trail. Sad to think we would have to do it again in the morning and in the dark. Thorung Phedi from the side of the mountain

Eating supper we talked with the South Africans and the couple from Washington. Very intersting. Think the US guy was here with the government and knew about the political history. Then two young guys sat at the table, one of their friends was sick with AMS.

Went to bed at 6.30 with all our clothes on, Everything packed for the morning. Haven't washed with water for two day. Put earplugs in and went to sleep. Heard everyone coming in but didn't bother us too much.
