Day 20 Saturday October 26th:PokharaWonderful breakfast at a restaurant down the street from our hotel. Walked to Lakeside. City is a mixture of old and new ideas. Many trekking companies to the Chitwan. International telephone shops. Reasonable to call home, about twelve dollars Cdn. In the lakeside area by Lake Phewa, many Nepali people going by boat to an island temple. The boats were overloaded and it looked dangerous. Festive air, selling trinkets etc. A Hindu festival I think. Felt very comfortable among these people. Cows in the middle of the street, cars honking, bicycles. Lots of pollution from the cars and motorcycles. Stopped at Garlic House restaurant. Had wonderful Minestrone soup and garlic bread. There is classical music playing. Sophistication in the middle of organized chaos. Attractive young Nepali men running the place. Walked through Lakeside amongst the cow shit and the cows. Cows and water buffalo roam at large on the streets. Came back a side street away from the tourist area. Made reservations to go to the Chitwan on the bus next morning. Will wing it to find a place to stay when we get there. Adds to the adventure. Bus ticket 200 rs. The toilet broke in our room and the water kept running. We had some good laughs over that and the insomniac roosters crowing all night. They were in a coup just outside our window. It sounded as if they all had colds. They probably had sore throats from all the crowing. Why is it in every third world country the roosters never seem to sleep. Thank God for ear plugs. The hotel keeper heard the water running and shut it off for us.
