CHAPTER 15 – BACK THE WAY THEY WERE

Everything seemed to be moving in slow motion, time was ticking slowly by, as Kevin eagerly hurried halfway across the world.

He finally reached the hotel, tired and exhausted, but still he almost ran through the halls blindly taking himself to her room.  He almost careened into a nurse as he stormed into her room.  Nat looked up to him, her eyes red and puffy.

“She’s not getting any better” she whimpered as Kevin quietly walked up

“Serena, sweetheart I'm sorry” Kevin whispered sitting in the empty seat on the other side of the bed.

“You go” he muttered looking at Nat “You need some rest” he remarked smiling briefly at her

She nodded slowly and released her tight hold on Serena’s hand to wipe away the stray tears down her face.  She turned and slowly walked out of the room.  He was right, she was exhausted, she didn’t want to leave her best friend lying there, but she knew she couldn’t stay either.

“Serena?” he whispered looking at the lifeless face before him

He knew it was foolish to pray that she would answer him, but he couldn’t take away the one thing he had left – Hope.  His hand held tightly onto her pale white, thin hand.  He dropped his head in another silent prayer.

He lifted his head, tears welling up in his faded green eyes.

“I shouldn’t have left you” he whimpered

“I never should have left you” he continued to mumble

“I wont leave you again Serena, I promise” he sniffed running his hand down the side of her face.

~ 3 DAYS LATER – 5th JULY 2001~

Nothing much had changed, her heart monitor kept at a steady rate.  But still she’d not opened her eyes.  The others had flown back from Australia, cutting the tour short, they were in and out of the hospital, trying to convince Kevin to get some sleep, however he would brush them off and refuse categorically to leave her bedside.

Kevin’s eyes wandered shut, forcing him to yank them back up.

“Serena” he whispered for what seemed like the millionth time

His words were shaky his face littered with the scars of no sleep and very little food.

“I know you can hear me Serena, I miss you, you know” he rambled

“It’s a nice day today, you’d like it” he muttered looking out the window briefly

He stood up form the chair, he needed to stretch a little.

“Would you like some air?” he inquired walking over to the window

He pushed it open, the fresh breeze pushing up against his face like a refreshing blast of water.

He walked around the edge of the bed, making sure to stretch his legs.

“Serena please just open you’re eyes, say something” he pleaded

“Kevin” a weak voice stuttered

He spun around to see Serena lifting her hand slightly off the bed.  He quickly rushed over coupling her hand into his.

~ 2 DAYS LATER – 7th JULY 2001~

Serena could finally sit up in the bed, without anyone’s help, she was begging to get stronger, though she still was under constant watch no only form the nurses that would come and go, but from Kevin, how refused stubbornly to leave her side.  He was the last thing she saw when she fell asleep and the first thing she saw when she woke up, not that she minded at all.

~ A MONTH LATER – 7th AUGUST 2001 ~

“Thank you for everything” Serena smiled waving goodbye to the nurses that had gathered to see her off

Her long stay in the hospital was finally over, she was allowed to return home.  While she was in the coma, she lost the ability to walk properly, and because of that she was a little shaky on her feet, but hours each day of hard work and strong motivation had pushed her to succeed, and she could now walk without the help of a walker.

“I moved most of your things over, a moving company will get the rest” Kevin informed her, pulling away from the hospital

“Kevin, I hate to be a problem” Serena sighed clicking in her seatbelt

“You’re not been a problem honey, I love the idea of living with you” he smiled

“Why are you so good to me?” she purred

“Because you deserve it, and because you’re so good to me” Kevin winked in reply

~ THAT NIGHT ~

“Oh baby this looks amazing” Serena sighed wrapping her arms around Kevin’s waist and burring her head into his shoulder blade

“I'm just glad you’re out of that hospital” he smiled leaning down to light the candles on the exquisitely set out table.

“So am I, the food sucks” she laughed placing a quick kiss on his cheek

~ 20 MINUTES LATER ~

“What? Why are you looking at me like that?” Serena questioned looking at Kevin, as she nibbled away at her dinner

“No reason” he shrugged a hint of mischief in his eyes

“Liar” she teased

“While you were ill I was talking to Nat” he started

“Oh no, what has she told you?” Serena laughed

“Just listen” he instructed

She shrugged as he went on to continue.

“I asked her about some of the things you’ve never done, places you’ve never been.  You’ve never been to the snow?”

“No, and where is this going?” she inquired hesitantly

“It’s about time you did” he said handing her a ticket over the table

“You and me, Canada and the snows waiting” he smirked

Serena could feel the tears welling up in her eyes, she didn’t know how to respond.  She ran across to the other side of the table and embraced Kevin tightly, almost pushing him off the chair.

“Baby thank you” she sniffed overcome with joy

“You’re worth what the world has to offer” he whispered into her ear.

Serena was happier than she’d been since meeting Kevin, finally things were starting to fit into place, almost as though she’d overcome the downs and now was to experience the ups.  Finally as if a God send, things were getting back to the way they used to be.
