Chapter 12 – Promises Are So Easy To Say.....

~ 2 WEEKS LATER ~

They’d been no more calls, no more thinking about him. Jet smiled to herself as she sat in the scorching hot sun in Nick’s Back yard. Her pen floated across the lined page of her small notebook diary. Everything seemed to have picked up, everything seemed so perfect now. His parents had finally learnt to accept her, hostility was next to zero and Covert were busy piecing together an album.

Dear Diary Jet wrote softly

I guess it’s true what people say, good things come to those who wait. I’ve waited my whole life to find someone that would care for me, that would love me, and that would be there for me no matter what. I used to dream about a time I would fall asleep in his arms, and feel completely at ease, completely safe, and I know I have that now.

I don’t know who to thank for this, or even how to thank them, I just know I wouldn’t trade what I have now for anything.

“Water fight” Nick screamed lunging a handful of water from the pool onto Jet.

She jumped up in fright.

“Now you asked for it Carter” she squealed peeling off her sarong and diving into the water.

She splashed viciously at him, spraying water all over him and all around the back yard.

~ AT THE SAME TIME ~

“Mr. McKennith you have read the rules of your parole do you at all argue with any of them?” a suit questioned as he tapped his pen on the stain wood table.

“No not at all, I think they are very fair” Ryan lied, keeping his best smile forward,

You pack of dimwits

“So you will obey them all”

“Down to every last dot above the ‘I’”

“You’ve shown over your stay in here Mr. McKennith that you truly show remorse for what happened and we as a board believe you when you tell us you have no bad intentions, so in that case it is our ruling that at the end of this week, you will be allowed to leave this prison, under supervision of a parole officer of course”

“Thank you, thank you all so much” Ryan smiled shaking their hands hurriedly

Kiss my ass and hope to die asshole, once I'm outta here I'm ditching the officer, and there wont be shit you can do about it

~ 7 DAYS LATER ~
Nick’s mouth moved down Jet’s neck devouring her as she tried to struggle away from him.

“Nick, that tickles” she laughed as he pinned her in the corner

“You’re mine now” he winked

The ringing of the phone sounded through the room.

“Come on, Nick I have to get that” Jet giggled

“Na, let Devin get it”

“He’s not here remember? You great dork” jet snickered pulling herself away form him

“Hello?” she said as Nick began biting her neck

“Is this the home of Devin & Jet McKennith?” a male voice inquired

“Yeah, who wants to know?” Jet responded, trying not to laugh as a result of Nick

“It’s Officer Harold Watson, I'm with the State Penitentiary out here in Arizona, we have some news for you”

“What?” Jet inquired hurriedly as she pushed Nick backwards

“Your father was up for parole and released this afternoon, I can assure you he is under strict watch and –“

“You turned him loose?” jet questioned her lip quivering

“Why yes ma’am but –“

“But nothing, you let an insane murderer back out into the world, do you know what this means?”

“I can understand your fears ma’am but I can assure you he has promised us that he will have nothing to do with either you or your brother”

“He promised you?’ Jet stuttered in disbelief “The same way he promised my mother to love her and cherish her, the same way he promised me he would never hurt me, that was 2 days before he stabbed her to death, he promises mean nothing. How could you, how could you do this?”

“Don’t you want to see your father put his life back together?”

“No! No I don’t, I want to see him rot in prison, because that’s what he deserves. Just keep him away from me, please just keep him away from me” Jet whimpered

“I promise you, we will”

“Let’s just hope your promise is more believable than his”

Jet slammed down the phone a torrent of tears flowing from her eyes.

“Jet, honey what’s wrong?” Nick inquired, essentially already knowing the answer

“They let him go, they let him free” Jet cried, her head falling onto his shoulder

“God, how could they do that? After what he done”

“I'm so scared Nick, I know he’ll come for me, I know he will”

“Why didn’t you tell him, the officer about him ringing you?”

“He’ll just think I'm making it up Nick, there’s nothing I can do, you don’t know my father, he’s not stupid, not at all, and he will have conned everyone at that prison”

“So now what?”

“I sit and wait, like his prey, like he expects me to be”

“Why don’t we get you some security or something?”

“You don’t get it Nick, he wont strike like that, he’ll wait, watching, and when he thinks I least expect it, he’ll come for me, I put him away, I'm the reason he was in jail, he’ll never forgive me for that”

“Jet there has to be something”

“Please Nick” she whispered wiping her eyes “Just hold me”

~ AT THE SAME TIME ~

“And?” another prison officer inquired his keys clanking onto his belt as he walked into the room

“She’s completely terrified” Harold replied, looking up in worry

“You don’t think McKennith should go?”

“That’s not my call”

“But if it was?”

“I'm not sure, that girl sounded pretty scared”

“So?”

“So I think I would have taken that into consideration”

“You wouldn’t have let him go?”

Harold looked down at his desk, he had 2 kids, and he knew he would do anything to protect them, maybe McKennith was exactly the opposite – do anything to harm them.

“No, I wouldn’t ever let that ass see the light of day” Harold sighed slamming his hand onto his desk

“So he’s your responsibility now, what you gonna do?”

“My Job Larry, that’s all. I made a promise to that girl that I would keep him away from her”

“And?”

“And I intend to do that”

“You think you can?”

“I hope I can”

“Promises are easy to say, harder to do”

“Don’t you think I know that Larry? I know that so much it rips me up inside”

“Sounds like you may have one hell-of-a job ahead of you”

“As always Larry, as always” Harold smiled walking out of the office
