Chapter 6 - Someone's Got A Big Mouth

~ 2 WEEKS LATER ~

“Glad you could make it” Nick smiled as Jet passed through the backstage security

“Yeah well, talk about a mission, it’s scary how many screaming girls there are out there” Jet laughed brushing the signs of a struggle off her

“Something happen?”

“Some girl didn’t like the fact they were letting me it, figures” she laughed

“Hey Jet, what up?” AJ smiled walking up to the two

“Hey freak” Jet winked

“Nice get-up” Jet commented studding the glove on Nick’s hand

“I thought only Michael Jackson wore one like this” she added laughing

“Shut up you” he sniffed grabbing her into a bear hug

“FIVE MINUTES” echoed backstage

“I'm gonna go round to the side and watch” Jet smiled kissing Nick briefly on the cheek

~ AFTER THE SHOW ~

“Hey you guys were great, not that it’s really my type of music, but you were really good, sure got those girls up the front eating out of your hand” Jet announced as Nick came running up to her

“So you liked it?” he inquired with a wink

“Yeah, for pop it was OK” she muttered purposely

Nick flung his arms around her, cackling like a maniac

“EW But you stink, go get changed” she responded slapping his butt

~ AN HOUR LATER ~

“So you really enjoyed it?” Nick smiled chomping away at his hamburger

“Will you stop asking me that already. And when par-say will you be going to one of Coverts performances”

“Name the time and place”

Jet thought for a moment, they had been asked to do a guest performance on MTV Rock The World Special.

“Okay Carter boy, MTV studio, 2 weeks”

“Got yourself a date”

~ 2 WEEKS LATER ~

Covert had been practicing relentlessly for 2 weeks solid, but finally their first Televised performance had arrived.

“Alight let’s get you ready” a stagehand announced walking up to the band.

“I’ll see you afterwards” Jet announced shaking nerviously

“It’s alright Jet, you’ll do great. Wanna know what I do, to combat the fear of crowds?” Nick smiled

“What?” Jet inquired pursing her lips into a smile

“Just imagine only one person, focus on that one person” he assured her

“I know you’re going to say no, but could you be out there in that crowd?”

“I’ll be by the backstage door, around to the side okay? You’ll be able to see me from there”

“Thank you” Jet gushed wrapping her arms around Nick’s neck

“God Boy you gotta stop growing” she chuckled as she placed a quick kiss on his lips

“Alright our next performers call Florida home, and are the latest edition to Rock’s family, let’s here it for Covert” the VJ announced as the lights above and around Jet lit up.

True to his word, Nick snuck around the side of the backstage corridor, and out the side door. The security guard looked at him oddly, but allowed him to stay there. From the corner of her eye she spotted Nick, his blond hair hidden under an over-used baseball cap, his smile warm and friendly. All of a sudden the crowds before her melted away, and he became her focus. The words flew out of her mouth with perfection, the loud drum behind her providing the beat, as the electric and bass guaitar to either side added the “soul” of the song. Time slipped by as Covert played 2 songs, and had the audience screaming their praise.

The program cut to an ad as Covert headed off the stage.

“You were really good” Nick said as Jet beamed proudly

“Wow, it was kinda strange been up there, I mean on stage at the Big Day out, you can barely see anyone, but out there it’s like your right in their face” Jet gushed quickly running a brush through her dark hair.

“Alright we’re back in 1 minute, please take your seats” the stagehand announced

“Argh, okay, I’ll see you soon” Jet smiled “Oh and thanks for standing out there” she added before following the others out onto the main stage.

“Welcome back, sitting here with me now are the members of Covert, who we just saw play on the side stage, welcome guys, and girl” the VJ introduced smiling at Jet

“Now let’s make sure I got this right, it’s Devin, Jeremy, Seth and Jet?”

“That’s right man” Seth replied

The conversation/interview consisted of questions referring to The Big Day Out, Recording, Singles, Musical influences and so on.

“So Jet, I hear a rumor there’s a puppy waiting backstage for you” the VJ laughed

“Um, what?” Jet responded
”A puppy, a boy”

“Oh right, yeah I do have a boyfriend if that’s what you’re asking”

“No forgive me for prying, but a little bird whispered in my ear, he’s a quite well known BOY in the music industry”

Jet smiled helplessly and shrugged.

The camera quickly flicked backstage where Nick was sitting on a chair looking up at one of the TV screens positioned along the wall. Realizing it was his face staring back at him, his head jolted around looking for a camera.

“Oh, now who was that?” The VJ chuckled, trying to keep a straight face

“Do you have a point to this?” Jet inquired trying her hardest not to look embarresed.

The camera flicked back to Nick, then back to the stage.

“Op’s there it goes again”

By now there were slight chuckles and wolf-whistling from the audience, as Jeremy, Seth and Devin, tried their hardest not to burst out laughing.

The camera flicked backstage again, a super imposed picture of Nick in all his Backstreet glory, floated next to him.

“Looks like we have a match” the VJ laughed

“I'm glad I humor you” Jet responded a little put out by the whole thing

“It’ like Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf of the music industry”

Jet remained silence, her head fuming.

“So you my dear, Jet, rumored to be the next Gwen Steffani are dating Teeny-Bopper heart throb, Nick Carter?”

Jet shrugged helplessly.

“Now isn’t that just one for the funny books. Rock meets Pop. We’ll be right back”

“Who told them?” Jet hissed as they exited the stage

The boys were too busy laughing to even notice Jet was talking.

“Who the fuck told them?” she announced for the second time.

“Gee’s Jet, kiss ya momma with dat mouth?” Seth laughed

“I'm gonna kick each one of your asses when we get home, now tell me who told that asshole?”

“Jet it doesn’t really matter” Nick sighed wrapping his arm around her shoulder

“Are you stupid? Of course it matters, they are making a joke out of us Nick, or should I call you little red riding hood?”

Jet slumped down onto the seat, frowning.

“It doesn’t really matter” Nick shrugged

“Yeah listen to the little blonde pop star Jet” Jeremy snickered

“You’re an ass” Jet shot back, glaring at him

“Well you have to admit it is kinda funny, Jet the wanna-be rebel with this prissy ballad singing momma’s boy”

“Jealous he’s getting some and you’re not?”

Jet stood up above Jeremy and starred down.

“Come on Nick, we don’t need these wankers” Jet announced grabbing Nick’s arm.

As she stormed away, her foot flicked the leg on the chair Jeremy was sitting on, and with one jolt, the chair skidded along the tiled floor and came toppling down, sending Jeremy straight to the floor.

“I'm sorry about that” Jet sighed as the two walked out into the bright sun

“It’s okay, like I said it doesn’t matter” Nick shrugged

They walked down the alleyway, where Nick had parked his car.

“Can we just go somewhere?” Jet pleaded running her hands through her dark hair.

“Sure” Nick replied starting the engine.

They soon found themselves back at the hill where they had come after their first night together.

“God I just wanna kill him” Jet screamed down the dirt track

“Look” Nick said spinning her around “It doesn’t matter” he added smiling

She stood up on her tiptoes and placed a soft kiss onto his lips. His hands slid around to her back, holding her in position. Their lips melded together with perfection.

“Nick do you ever just want escape?” Jet inquired in a soft whisper

She turned to face the city, her body leaning up against his. His arms slithered around her waist.

“With you?” he smiled burying his head in her neck

“Seriously, don’t you just want to leave, fly away, leave everything behind and don’t ever look back? That’s what I'm going to do, I'm going to leave, I'm going to get out of this place” Jet sighed breathing in the warm air

“What are you afraid of?” Nick questioned

“Nothing” Jet lied

“You just sound like you’re running from something, that’s all”

“I'm running from this place, and I wont be looking back”

“What about me?”

“Come with me”

Silence hung through the air, nothing needed to be said.
