Chapter 5

Remi Osuna's Side

~The Next day~

"Tell me more about this Kane," Shezrae said, as we sat on a bench in Courtland Park. The sun was shining brightly, and its heat reminded me of scorching days in the dry season at home.

"That was a mistake," I said, trying to excuse my stupidity in the matter.

"Not quite Remi. It was your little fling with him that made you realise who you were and just how much danger you were in. So tell me more about him."

I sighed and began my story at the beginning, how we had met, why I was attracted to him, what it led to, what I found out, how I didn't care if he was only using me for something I didn't understand, the horror I felt when I did understand, everything right down to the last night I spoke to him.

"What are you doing with this Mr. Richardson you've been telling me about?"

"He's gotten me a job where I make a lot of money. You said in your book that I needed it."

"Yes, yes. I'll tell you where you can find your different paraphernalia in a moment. How strong is your faith in God?"

I thought for a moment. Strong enough I supposed.

"You could get trapped if you're not firmly rooted. Do you pray every day non-stop? Offer all of your actions up for Him? Have Him in your thoughts every moment?"

Most of the time. Except when I was insulting people.

"You lose your temper a lot… we have to deal with that. You insult people a lot, also something to deal with. However, you don't sin as much as many who have joined me, but you realise that certain behaviours must go."

"Yes. You're right. How do you know all these things?"

"It's your eyes. They're very expressive."

She smiled warmly at me.

"You're going to do just fine. Now, you are very lucky that you have had first hand experience with a vampire sorcerer. They seem to be in league with every evil creature around. You have to befriend them again. You'll need help getting them to believe that you're really an ally. I suppose I could ask Delmar…"

"Delmar? Delmar who?"

"Delmar Eduardo. Charming young man isn't he?"

"But I thought he was on their side!"

Shezrae laughed.

"Oh this is going to be so much fun!"

Mallory Fontaine's Side

I picked up the mink vase in the corner of Kevin's living room and flung it at the wall. I screamed in rage. Dammit this was not working! What is wrong with me? Have I lost my touch or something? Why the hell doesn't he want me anymore?

I sat down on his white leather couch crying. I really wanted to live in this house. It would be my dream come true. I wanted to be his wife. I wanted him so bad. Why is he shutting me out now? Why the hell can't he use his two eyes to see that I'm the best woman he'll ever get? What's keeping him back from me?

He's so cold to me now.

I looked around his living room and smiled at the smashed vase and the mark on the wall where it had hit. I then saw a notepad on the phone table. I went over and smoothed the pages. I picked it up and read.
2:30 - meeting with the Firm - B-Boys
3:45 - Press meeting.
5:00 - Meeting with Remi's crew…

That was it. Damn. Why am I so blind? Jealousy welled up in me and quickly died away. No worries. That little nigger would be quite easy to get rid of. Then he was all mine.

Delmar Eduardo's Side

Locked in a recording booth in complete silence, I pulled my bass guitar onto my lap and started a riff, closing my eyes and letting the familiar feeling of flying come over me as all of my frustration was poured into my music. I made the octave slide on the E-string and my hand quivered as I held the note. At this point I nearly collapsed with the emotion. I sensed that someone was peering at me from the sound booth window. I looked up to see Remi. She would have come sooner or later.

I got up from the seat and was about to unlock the door when my cell phone rang. I paused to answer it. I held up my hand to Remi so that she would wait a bit.

"Hello?"
"Delmar? It's Shezrae."
"Hey, how you doing?"
"Fine, thank you. No time for pleasantries though. She knows you're on our side. But I want you to explain what happened to you okay? And she's going to ask you for help with something. I want you to protect her as best you can. Okay?"
"Kay. No problem."

I pressed the 'end' button and unlocked the door. She flew through the door.

"Hello, Miss Osuna."

She was silent for a while. She had her mouth open as if she wanted to say something.

"Um, hi Delmar."
"What do you want?"
"I wanted to talk."
"About what?"
"About what I'm trying to do."

I sat down at the trap set and beckoned her to sit on the stool.

"Delmar, I'm an Impure Virgin… you know what I'm talking about right?"

I smiled.

"Of course. I'm immortal."
"Yes I know… I kind of always knew… but I need your help… Shezrae… you know, the writer of the book? She told me that you could help me."

"Alright. What do you want help with?"

She drew in a deep, nervous breath.

"I had a boyfriend… Kane… he was a vampire… and a sorcerer as well… that's how I found out what I really was. He told me one day. He was about to use me and my blood and everything, and then he suddenly decided that I wasn't really the one. I don't know why… the point is… I have to get back into their circle, but I don't believe they'll think I'm an ally… I mean… I left a dead cat outside of his door once, and from then on I think he hated me with a passion. He's going to turn all of them against me… but I have to use them… you know what I mean right?"

I nodded slowly.

"You need me to get them to accept you again?"
"Yeah, basically…"
"No problem."

There was a silence for a while.

"Is there something else you wanted to ask me, Remi?"
"Yeah…if you're one of them, why are you one of us?"

I sighed. I knew this question would come.

"Long story, Remi. Make yourself comfortable."

Delmar Eduardo's Side - 1782

I woke up suddenly, with my head burning. To my left, covered by satin sheets was Isabel. She looked so tiny, so vulnerable, lying there with her beautiful creamy skin covered only by thin nightclothes and the sheets. I stroked her dark brown hair. She stirred and her eyes fluttered open. She yawned and stretched and I noticed, not for the first time, the sharp points of her canines. She had filed them to look like that.

"What time is it?" she asked.
"Not yet dawn…go back to sleep love."

She smiled at me, and her eyes flashed. She then fell back to sleep.

I looked at her and realised how close I had yet again come to losing it, I knew I wanted to lose it to her. I loved her that much. However, when we started, she'd always stop before we could do anything.

"I'm not ready yet, Delmar…neither are you. You're still a boy."

I'm 26 years old for crying out loud! I wanted to say. But I held back and did as she wished.

She was awake again.
"I said go back to sleep, love."
"No… I'm not tired anymore. Besides, I want to show you something."

She took my hand and led me down the hall. The castle was dark, pitch black, and an uneasy feeling hung heavily in the air. The servants who slept outside of their masters' doors for security looked like drugged sentinels, barely alive the way their tired bodies slumped onto the walls. Their candles were worn to the stubs and were snuffed out. I, however, had shirked my duties, and fallen in love with the woman whose room I guarded.

We turned down many dark passageways, taking many twists and turns and turning down corridors that I didn't even notice were there. Something told me that we were descending.

Finally, we reached a room with an iron door handle. The dungeons. There was something definitely sinister about this. I began to feel uncomfortable.

"Isabel? What is this? What does it mean?"
"Calm yourself, Delmar…"

She took out an ancient key from nowhere. She couldn't have hidden it anywhere… Opening the door, she snatched my hand and pulled me in.

"Sit. On that chair."

I was compelled to obey. I don't know why, but she tied my wrists behind the chair and a gag around my mouth. I was completely terrified. She had turned into a witch and I was powerless against it. She was breathing heavily, and anxiously. I didn't know what to do.
I blacked out.

Delmar Eduardo's Side - Present Day

"I cannot really recall what happened then, I just remember a gleaming knife, and an X-like scar on the left side of my chest… my body from then on was frozen in time, I never aged, and while my friends were dropping like flies of old age, I was still young and hearty. I went into hiding. I've lived all over, really. I have seen everything. I became immortal. I knew that, but I wondered, why? It had something to do with Isabel.
"I met Shezrae one day a few years ago… she took one look at me and said… 'Oh no, it's too late'… it was then that I found out a gut wrenching secret that I would wish upon my life that I knew earlier…"

Remi looked awestruck. Her lip quivered slightly.

"You're the other…"
"Yes. You're right."
"It already happened to you? You can't do anything to change it?"
"You know as well as I do that that's impossible."

She was silent for a while.
"Listen… I'm sorry. I mean, six months of bad talking you and giving you grief is kind of hard to erase, it's just that I had no idea that you were… I thought you were one of them…"

"Shh… It's all right. I know."

She looked up at me and a flicker of a smile graced her face. I couldn't help smiling back.
